In engineering, "Standard" often refers to specific quantities or measures agreed upon within a given industry. For example a gas can be sold at many different pressures or temperatures. However, its value may have to be calculated by determining how much gas would exist at some agreed upon standard temperature and pressure. Metal alloys may be produced to comply with specified standards so that seller and buyer know exactly what is being exchanged (under contract). Standard can also mean the usual way of doing something. For example popular songs were often arranged into fixed bars of music such as sixteen bars for different parts such as chorus, bridge and refrain that were then repeated (with additional lyrics) perhaps AABC; and old music arranged in just such an accepted manner are know as "old standards."

It means "of regularity" and "consistant form". Which basically means that when speaking of a unit, the magnitude is a generally accepted way of measuring. Standard means that it is the usual way of doing or viewing something.

In Chemistry when you standardize a solution - you relate all your experiments with respect to that 'standard' solution. It's kinda like a reference point (or origin point). Just like the prime meridian and the equator are 'standards' to measure space co-ordinates on the earth.

All of these answers are WRONG. Cracker was a named used to describe immigrants from Scotland and Ireland used in the 17th Century. It later became a term used to describe poor whites in the south in the 18th century. At one point in time these people proudly used this name to describe each other, but then later a derogatory term for whites equal to poor white trash. It had nothing to do with slave owners cracking a whip.
