Because you have more than one OS on your system that's why it ask which one you want to use.
On c:\boot.ini, here what it says:
[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
That's my settings when I didn't bother to receive a choose for OS. Make timeout=0 and the one on your default which OS you preferred.

If you are seeing the screen asking you to select the operating system and further asked to hit enter to enter the operating system. Then it is very easy to resole it. I will walk you through the steps.
Please follow the steps very carefully. It is important you do so.
1. Go to your normal screen. Into windows..
2. Click start and then click run.
3. In the run window, type msconfig. And click OK.
4. In the system configuration window click on the boot tab.
5. Click on the check all boot paths.
6. Click OK on the message that comes up.
7. Click apply and then close the window.
8. You may be asked to restart the computer. Is so click restart.
9. When the computer restarts you will not have the OS choices.
10. On the desktop you will see a screen that says " you have used system configuration to make changes to your computer".
11. If you see this screen put a check mark on do not show this message again and click OK.
12. Restart your computer one more time.
Your computers issue must be fixed with these steps.
If not you can mail me back at vijay_30482@yahoo.com.
All you will need to do is follow the steps. Please don't try to edit the boot.ini file, since that is what helps your computer start up. Try the steps mentioned.

If there was already an OS on the computer when Windows XP was installed, it would automatically create a boot menu to let you select which OS to boot into.
There are ways to remove the other OS if you don't want it taking up space. I'll not go into details here. Check http://www.deja.com or another forum for more info on that. If you want to have it skip the menu and just boot to XP, you can edit your boot.ini file. Just make sure you research that first so you don't mess it up.

i dont know which two os installed in your system, if two os there u can edit boot file, on xp home edition, go my computer then right click on that and choose propertise then advanced from it 'startup and recovery' section click settings and from there choose edit, here remove that line where other os mentioned but very careful if it incorrectly modified u may not able to log on your system if u r not sure then make ur xp home edition as fast detect os and set the time less than 3/4 seconds or less, and please back up the registry, thats it. hope it will solve ur problem!

You have it set up for a dual boot system. You need to edit your boot.ini.
Here's an easier and safer way:
First make sure you have System Restore enabled before making any changes to your system.
Right click on My Computer and go to Properties.
This will bring up System Properties.
Go to Advanced.
Look at the bottom section that says Start up and Recovery and click the Settings button.
Uncheck "Time to display list of operating systems" and make sure your default operating system is selected.
Restart your computer to test.

John . . . I thought you got your brains splattered all over Dealy Plaza ! I miss you, man.
What do you have to choose from? If it is only one choice, you can
right click on My Computer, click on System Properties, click on Startup and Recovery
set the display list of OS time to only a few seconds or zero.
This isn't a real problem, just maybe annoying.

Right click on My Computer, Properties, Advanced tab, Startup and Recovery portion, Click on settings button. You can edit the settings there. Be careful in deleting. Good luck. :)
