P = personal.

There are also Diplomatic and government Official passports, and passports for minors. There is also a special no-fee passport for people asked to go abroad and do work for the government, including the peace corp I believe.

The letter "P" simply means "passport." It was put into the US passport format when we envisioned using the same document for other purposes, also, but we finally decided that was a bad idea. All types of US passports - tourist, official, and diplomatic - have the same letter P in the same place.

The P also serves sometimes as a fraud detection device. It's funny how some forgers and counterfeiters try to get fancy and change the letter to something else, thinking it has more meaning than it really has.

I don't know why it's less than 25%. Part of the reason is probably because most people don't leave North America and until recently you didn't need a passport for the Caribbean or Canada. I think you make some unsubstantiated assumptions. Not everyone has the means to travel to Europe or Asia. People have other priorities. Also, because a person doesn't have a valid passport now doesn't mean they've never had one. I can imagine that as people get older some don't bother renewing the passport.

It's a lot cheaper to travel than everyone is assuming. Lots of travel agencies try their darndest to get Americans to travel. If you look online, you can get a plane ticket to England roundtrip for less than $500 and hotel and air packages allow you to save a lot more money. You can stay in Tunisia for less than $25 dollars a night in a five star location. And if you go to Guatemala forget about having to spend a lot of money to get some international experience. Just call a travel agent and the beforementioned plane ticket to England is cut in half -- roundtrip!! Another little known fact is that we're like the only country in the world that doesn't need a visa to go practically anywhere(with the exceptions of North Korea, China, or any other communist country). The reason: these other countries know that if Americans come to visit, they aint gonna stay. How many of us really would be illegal immigrants with the things we've been taught here about our country. And while it is very influential (still can't believe there's a Starbucks inside the Forbidden City) that doesn't excuse our intolerance and blatent ignorance about other countries/cultures. I don't think the assumptions are unsubstantiated, the problem with Americans are they don't see the merit in traveling because they have been fed the lie that the world beyond our borders is a dangerous place. When in fact it's not true. America is the dangerous place according to people from other countries. I have lived abroad for four years and have traveled to over ten countries and have loved every minute of it. It's true some people don't have the means, but I think the information about it is just as lacking. Keep broadening your horizons. I am just as shocked and as disappointed as you are that Americans are the only ones making excuses for not wanting to get to know the world around them. It's good to love your country, but not so much to the point where it's at the expense of a good reputation.

There is no blood type "P"... I dont know jack about passports, but my guess would be "personal" if you're using the passport for your own pleasure, rather than using it for business reasons, but what the hell do I know??? lol
