" At the same time that Hellmann's® Mayonnaise was flourishing in the east, Best Foods, Inc., introduced mayonnaise to Californian consumers. As Hellmann's® expanded on the east coast, Best Foods® proved to be a smashing success in the west. It was nearly inevitable then, that in 1932, Richard Hellmann Inc., was acquired by Best Foods, Inc. To this day, Hellmann's® Mayonnaise is sold east of the Rockies and Best Foods® Mayonnaise is sold west. "
once Hellmann's bought Best, they probably didn't want to change the brand name on either coast ( it would hurt sales)- so they just kept the name that was known on each coast.

It's kind of the reverse - Hellman's is called Best Foods on the west coast so all the people who have moved to the west coast from the east coast still have the best mayonnaise and are surprised to find it the same!

It seems silly to me to call Hellman's best foods. What kind of a brand name is that. It's like Ford calling it's west coast cars "Best Cars"
