An NGT is haning out of your nose and is taped to your nose and very uncomfortable for the pt. It passes thru the nose down the esophagus and ends in the stomach. These kinds of tubes are cumbersome to the pt and occasionally will curl in the esophagus and roll back up and the risk is travel to the lung. The only way you can know for sure the NGT is in place is through an XR.
The NGT is short term. It is irritating and not intended to stay in for long periods of time.
The PEG tube is inserted surgically directly into the stomach. It can be rolled up and discreetly taped to the abdominal wall. It is a direct route to the stomach and the chances of it rolling up and gettin into the lung are slim to none. PEG tubes are for long term nutrition. They can stay in for months to years. PEGs are much more comfortable than Ng tubes because the tube is not haning out of your nose irritating your face and nose.
