yeah, he should be fine. Put the new cage near him for a while and let him look at it and get used to its presence, then you could a) take him out of the old one and put him in the new one or b) put the cage doors together and let him do it himself.
As for dyeing, birds don't usually do that... they don't have fingers for opening the packages of Rit and they usually get frustrated and give up.

No Sweetie, he won't die. Even if you just put him in the cage right away. He might not like it for a while, though.
I have lots of parrots and I have never had one die when they get a new cage. As a matter of fact, one of their favorite games is stealing each other's cages.
If you want to make the move a little easier for your bird, you can put both of the cages close to each other. Let them just sit there for a day or two and don't try to put the bird in the new cage.
After a day or two, put the bird in the new cage for a few hours. Let it explore the new cage and then put him back in his old cage at night to sleep. After about a week of spending days in the new cage and nights in the old one, you can just leave him in the new cage and get rid of the old one.
Of course this would be much more difficult if you can't easily handle the bird to move it from cage to cage. If you can't, just put the new cage next to his old one for a few days and then move him to the new cage. Leave the old cage for a few more days and then get rid of it.
Your birdie will be fine no matter what. It's so thoughtful of you to want to make the move as easy as possible. You are a really good pet owner!

I don't know what kind of a bird you have, but I have two Indian Ring Necked Parrots.
I bought them a larger cage and although they were a little confused at first, they came to love it within just a few hours.
Don't worry. Birds LOVE space.

It's still a cage and the bird still will be jailed. Imagine this: You having a pair of beautiful wings... gorgeous, wonderfull, fantastic wings, and jailed forever in your room, what a torture, right?
So sad.

I doubt it. Was he really that attatched to his cage? Why don't you set the two cages side-by-side and put all his food and toys in the new one. He'll figure it out.

I agree that allowing him access to both for a while would be the best way.
