When I walk down the road with my new puppy ON HER LEASH, my next door neighbor's pitbull (mean dogs aren't born, they're made) runs over and tries to bite her! There's a leash law in my area, but I don't want the dog to get taken to the pound...just to not be allowed to run around! The owners are SO negligent! What can I do in this situation? I feel bad for both animals!

I love dogs, too, and see your problem. While you don't want the poor dog to go to the pound (it's not his fault his people are jerks), you don't want your puppy hurt, either (or anyone else, for that matter).

If you talked to the neighbors, and they haven't acted, you really need to call animal control. He might hurt your puppy, or even you. If he hurts you, he'll be put to sleep. Usually, Animal Control removes a dog only as a last resort, or if there is evidence of abuse or neglect. Usually, they give a warning or a ticket first without abuse. And if there is abuse, you're doing the dog a favor.

You can't do anything, the most that you can do is say NO with a stern voice and be calm and assertive. Maybe the other dog would notice and back off.

But more common then not if the other dog wants to keep biting your dog, it's then in a state of mind where it wants to be the aggressor and will probably want to hurt your dog badly. Sometimes described as being in the RED zone.
You can't help the dog if it's in this behaviour, as it will be totally fixed at one aim.... to bite your dog.

You can't do much I'm afraid, it's up to the owners of the dog to put the dog in it's place and train it.

If the owners keep ignoring this behaviour someone will get hurt.
Best to call the animal control.. They will have a word with the owners... if it carries on like this then the pound may come and take the dog away... Hopefully it shouldn't get this far and the owners will put a leash on the dog.

Try not to be aggressive to the Pitbull, if the situation escalates, those types of dogs are pretty strong. Also they have a lock jaw (where if the jaw locks on bite down, it's very hard to get the jaw to open again), so stay away from aggresive confrontations.

I hope this helps...If the pitbull intended to bite your dog, you aren't fast enough to stop it. If your dog (bravo for using your leash and a boot to the head to the pittie's people for letting it loose) has not been bitten, we can be sure the pittie doesn't intend to bite.
However, the pittie is being inappropriate and wrong. And the owners need to be aware that having a pit loose like that will only eventually cause their dog to be taken away by animal control. Nor should the pit be allowed to practice bad behavior like pouncing mouth first on other dogs.
But if your dog hasn't actually been hurt, then the pit hasn't learned to be aggressive, and we must be grateful.
You could try looking confidently at the pittie, and in a conversational, but firm voice, ask the pittie to "Sit". EVERY dog knows sit. Pits take commands very well and love training.
If that doesn't work, try carrying a squirt bottle with just water and telling the pit "leave it" then give it a squirt.
Most importaly STAY CALM. Our excitement can actually cause an incident to happen when dogs meet.
Offer the pittie a tasty treat then toss it far away.
Befriend the pittie.

First thing, you've got to think about your puppy's safety. If she gets attacked by a dog while she's so young, that experience could make her dog-aggressive for life. My dog is aggressive to other dogs, and I suspect that's the reason why.
It might be helpful to carry a baton, pepper spray, or umbrella, just something to ward off the other dog if it tries to attack. If the pit bull tries to attack your puppy, open up the umbrella in the attacking dogs face. That's usually enough to deter the aggressor.
You need to talk to the owner and explain the situation. Most people are pretty understanding if you explain politely. My neighbors let their German Shepherds run around off leash all the time. I've explained to them that my dog is aggressive to other dogs, and now they are considerate enough to bring their dogs in when they see my dog and I walking down the street.
As long as your community doesn't have pit bull restrictions, the dog won't get taken to the pound for the infraction. The owners will just get a ticket. At worst, the dog will get taken to the pound if the owners are not home, and they will just have to pay a small fee to get the dog out. If they are put in the position of paying a fine, most likely they will keep their dog restrained from then on.
Until the situation gets straightened out, it might be a good idea to modify your walk so it doesn't take you in front of your neighbor's house, if possible. Hope everything works out for you!

If you don't want the dog taken to the pound and the pits owners won't put the dog up properly then your left with these options. 1. talk to the owner explian your problem. 2. go to the police and explian to them you don't want the dog taken away but you want the owner to be responsible ( use this method after you talk to the owner cause more than likely police will ticket the owner )3. take the owner to small clames court sue for for restraint of there dog.....you may have no choice but to have the dog taken away... good luck

go talk to the neighbors and tell them to keep the dog on a leash and tell them it is the law. Let them know that if their dog inflicts any damage to your dog that they will be responsible for the vet bill. If they still refuse, call the humane society and report them.

If the pit bull is attacking your dog, it is most likely attacking other dogs. One day it could attack a child and maime it or kill it. If the dog is not being restrained, I would report it to animal control. You could always try walking somewhere else and avoid the dog.

If they don't take responsibility for their dog then you need to report it cuz not only your dog is in danger but others also.
If their dog does get picked up then they will ALWAYS have the chance to pick it back up and if they love their dog then they should take better care of the situation.
