As a trainer, I'd always recommend careful consideration and training for the first dog first. Dog day care is also a good idea instead of buying a second dog.
And it is a bad idea to bring one puppy into a home with a resident puppy. Not only will they teach each other bad habits, but they will tend to bond with each other instead of you.
Better to wait until the resident dog is over 3, then bring in a pup.

I did. We work during the day and my first rescue dog would get a little bored when we were gone. We used to hire a petsitter to come halfway through the day to let her out and also to play with her a little. We eventually fostered a male and decided to keep him. We still hired the petsitter for awhile -- a few weeks after we got our second dog, the petsitter told us that we don't need her anymore. She said the dogs more or less ignore her and played with each other when she was there.
Then, when my first mastiff was about 9, I decided to get a mastiff puppy. The second male rescue was pretty attached to my older girl -- he would get anxious when she was out of the house at the vet and the like. Since I didn't think my first one would be around much longer, I decided to get a puppy so that he wouldn't be so depressed when she was gone. My first matiff died at 11 and thankfully, by then, my second had bonded to the puppy and they didn't seem to get very depressed when she died.

My boyfrend and I adopted a Chow from the pound and she bacame his dog per say. So in turn, I wanted one, so I adopted a Rott from someone in the paper and at 1st I didn't think they would get along! Now they are the best of friends! If one is outside for too long, the one inside goes nuts!
I could never even dream of separating them! So yeah, I mainly got the Rott puppy so I would have a companion but she ended up being my Chows best friend!

i have 4 dogs and 3 SPCA foster dogs *one just had 8pups*.
i DID NOT get the 4 dogs just so they would have "someone to play with". that's about a smart as someone having another baby because you don't want the first one to get lonely! in the end its YOUR responsibility to entertain these dogs...not each other..YOUR the pack leader..or are you?
if you can't spend time with the first dog...why on earth would you get another one to neglect?
NOT SAYING THAT YOU DID THIS, JUST SAYING I SEE THIS A LOT!!!!!!
working with the SPCA i see a lot of dogs that come in a pair to the shelter. the owners thought "we will get another one to keep him happy" and don't realize that the dogs need HUMAN interaction or you have just DOUBLED your problems. its sad! and a lot of times these dogs are so scared they bond tightly because they only KNOW each other..and they HAVE to be adopted together. its very hard to find a family that will take two dogs that are active and need attention, let alone 1.
if you have enough time to spend with a dog...great, get more. my dogs are rotten!!! we take them to the park, agility training, Frisbee competitions, and then there are family outings, the state park, and the lake.
couch potatoes should get gold fish..not dogs!

That is awesome. i love dogs. My dogs were like that, but then the older one is less active, so the younger one needs someone else to play with. I have a rescued rottweiler, and a rott/shepherd from a couple who had a baby and were gonna give her to a shelter.

Way to go! But I hope you adopted them from a shelter rather than buying them from a merchant or breeder.
