The urushiol oil from the poison ivy plant does not bind to the skin cells of dogs the way it does humans. So the dog does not suffer the rash the way humans do. The urushiol oil can remain on the fur of the dog however, and when the fur of the dog comes in contact with human skin, the urushiol oil binds to the human skin and may trigger an allergic reaction.

I just learned a little about poison ivy and dogs. It doesn't affect them unless they get it directly on their skin. BUT their fur can hold the oils and can give you a reaction from the poison ivy. Bathing the dog should help get rid of the oil.
