Anyone can have prayer in prison. You have the right to kneel by your bunk and pray, or stay in your bed and pray, or be out in the yard surrounded by barbed wire praying silently. Do I think its right? Yes. Do I think that most of the prisoners use prison as an excuse to find religion? Yes, absolutely.

There should never be an infringement on anyone's religious beliefs, in prison or out in society. We as humans have the right to believe in religion what ever we choose.

Anyone can pray to whomever and whatever in prisons.

There are many protestant and fundamentalist Christians, along with Muslims, Jewish, and others in prison. Prayer is the one freedom that prisoners do have.

The do not stop anyone from praying in a prison.

It is one man trying to do this. Also, he doesn't just mention Catholics, he also mentions Orthodoxies and Lutherans. The reason he states this has to do with the Liturgy of the Word that is presented during our Masses.

His complaint is that government monies are being spent to convert people to Christianity. If a religious group wants to do a prison Ministry, it's up to them to raise the funding, not take money from the government.

Perhaps you should read the WHOLE article, or an unbiased one.

He stated in his verdict:

"Though an inmate could, theoretically, graduate from InnerChange without converting to Christianity, the coercive nature of the program demands obedience to its dogmas and doctrine," the decision said.

While I agree that freedom of religion is a fundamental right, I do not believe people should be forced into a faith.

I'm a Christian - very devout, but the way to bring people to Christ is not to force them, but to show them what love truly is. It is only then they will truly feel his love and strive to change thier lives.

PS: To Ye River:Only Catholics can celebrate the Eucharist, protestants can only take part in communion. Catholics are not allowed to partake in another denominations communion because by doing so it means we agree with their interpretation of the act, which is just symbolic, whereas we use a Consecrated Host. I have been to communion services with my friends, I do not participate in them because it goes against my beliefs as a Catholic.

Wow! I know a guy in an evangelical prison ministry, and for them, "Evangelical" means "non-denominational." They've had to "Downplay" the eucharist because the catholics in prison tend to have problems with recieving communion from women pastors...

Maybe we should just go back to the old days, where any problems the king can't solve get brought to the pope. After all, he's a big enough man to admit they may have been wrong about that whole flat earth thing...

Prayer in prison is an individual right that cannot be regulated by the state. And as an inalienable human right so guaranteed by our constitution, freedom of religion is exactly that --freedom to express oneself in any religion... and certainly not to be limited to one specific religion... any more that the very act of prayer can be required or outlawed.

This judge sounds a little suspect in the current events department, but then most of our elected officials sound like they're from the Middle Ages;
