its like maintaining a car. If you get it serviced when you are supposed to, you can pick up problems before they start or before they become too expensive to fix from other damage.
Its up to you really whether you want to service your car or pay heaps to fix all the engine problems caused by not changing the oil.

Plaque forms calculus on your teeth underneath your gums. Brushing removes most plaque before it turns into calculus, but not all since we can't brush under our gums. The most common areas that calculus builds up in are behind your bottom front teeth and on the outside of your upper last molars. Calculus can only be removed by scaling that is done by a dental hygienist, if it is not it can cause decay and eventually bone loss. So make sure you visit the dentist as often as they recommend (ex. 3 mos, 6 mos, 9 mos)
