I adopted a female pit when she was four months old from a kill shelter. She's been through obedience training, field training and even though she is retired now, she was a search and rescue dog for many years and we would often visit seniors. She has always been treated as part of the family and dearly loved. She adores children of all ages, has been a mother to orphaned kittens and would never hurt any one. This dog would die for me. She is the result of mutual respect, love, understanding, loyalty and patience. I have three pit bulls, one is currently going through search and rescue training now. It's what you put into a dog that makes it the kind of pet you want, regardless of the breed.

It's all in how you raise them. The whole "locking jaw" thing is just a myth. Autopsies have been done, and the jaw structure is the same as any other dog. Pit bulls have been bred to be friendly to people, but they tend to be aggressive to other dogs. But, if you raise them with lots of love and discipline, they can be the best family pets ever. They are no more likely to "turn" on their owners than any other dog. However, they are large and strong dogs, and like any other large dog, they should not be left alone around young children. Children also need to be taught not to tease or torment the dog. That can make any dog mean! IMHO, pit bulls make wonderful pets.

Let me just say this.
I own a dual registered Pit. He is great with my kids and other dogs.
That being said, the most important thing you can do is purchase a dog from a reputable breeder and expect to pay a little more.
you have to socialize your dog and make sure you are the boss in the dogs eye's.
If you are really serious about getting a good dog check this site out.
there are good breeders all over the country.
www.amstaffnetwork.com
this site is for the AKC version of the Pitbull but many of the breeders have dual registered dogs.
Mine is registered with the AKC and the UKC. I know where his bloodline comes from so I am assured that there was no bad dogs being bred that should not have.
hope this helps.

I believe pit bulls can be trained to be civil as many dogs. I do not believe from my experience that some dogs can be trusted around small children. I have a Husky and there are times when he does not feel well where he may snap at a stranger.
We had a neighbor pit bull which came crashing through our screen door in the spring time to attack my sleeping Husky aroung his neck -both my wife and the owner pounded on the dog to get him to release his grip. The police said that the owner was most likely training him to fight , unfortunately . The dog was taken away by the owner to the next state to avoid the pound and never seen agiain. Al animals have an inherent temperment which should be considered as well as their training.

My father in law had a pit that he had raised from a pup. It was very loyal to him but when anyone else came by she had to be locked in the backyard so she wouldnt hurt anyone. Their grand daughter came over one day with a friend, the grand d, yelled when she opened the door and saw the pit, Before anyone could anything about it the dog had the girl by the back of the heal and tore it up. It took several surgeries for them to fix the ankle to even close to right. I could not and would not trust her around my kids. So please be careful.

Someone I work with has a friend that had a Pitbull who on command would go up to their baby and very very gently pick him up by the back of the shirt and bring him to his parents.I guess it was really cute..also as the baby got to be a toddler he would ride the dog like a horse and the dog had no problem with it whatsoever. There are no such things as bad dogs..just bad owners.DO be wary of getting an adult Pit who's background you don't know though..that could be dangerous if the dog was ever abused.

I don't think there are any good pitbull stories. They've been bred to be aggressive, so you can't blame the dogs. Why do people want aggressive dogs. No good having them for defence because they're just as likely to turn on you. You can't turn an aggressive dog into a gentle one, many people have tried and failed. We've just had another sad case of a little girl of 4 being mauled to death by dogs she thought were her friends. (They knew her, she just wanted to pet them and then that happened) If your sister doesn't want some child's death on her conscience she'd be better to look for a gentler dog!

I own a pitbull. I have owned her since she was a pup. She has never turn. If a stranger come to the house. She will sit by me the whole time but will not growl or bark at the person, jsut making sure they dont do anything stupid. Recently she has pups. Many people come to look at them. All we have to say is 'its alright' and she will let them pick them up and everything. My opinion of many people who have pitbulls shouldn't. They train them to fight. When the breed was first founded they were made to be a family dog and were great around everyone, including kids.

if you get a pit - make sure you train it. enroll in puppy classes, socialization is the key to a friendly happy dog. make sure you get the pup around lots of dogs and people and intorduce him to new things. Any dog raised with love will only have that to give in return. Alot of pitbulls aren't raised correctly and they are a high maintenace dog but with the right owners and the right training they can be a very loving family pet.

I own a pitbull and he is the best dog on the planet. He really is. He is loving affectionate, great with kids and sooo damn cute I will send you pictures if you want to see. He was actually my boyfriends dog and I didnt meet him until he was over 1 year old and he is fantastic. I have never had a problem with him. But his apperance scares people but it just makes me laugh because he behaves better than anyones dog I meet. With pitbulls they will be fine as long as the owner is confident and doesnt allow the dog to do what ever it wants. This is just common sense apply it to any dog. And before she gets one have her watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel he is super dog trainer. But any dog will be great as long as you have the love and patienece to train it. But they are definatly now my favorite. Great loyal dogs.
