dreams can help you work out issues in your subconcious that you are not able to figure out in your waking hours

Many believe that dreams are the result of the human subconscious processing issues that concern one on a deeper level. To do so, the subconscious uses images in a dream that mean something when one understands the symbol's meaning. Running in a dream usually means trying to escape something/someone that is a problem for the dreamer. To attempt to run but not be able to do so suggests that there is some situation or person that you, the dreamer want to get away from, or escape from, but are not able to do so. For example, if a married person had this type of dream, I would suspect that either their marriage was troubling them (but the person would not admit it, even to themself), or a new baby was just too much to handle, or maybe having a job and a family was causing too much stress. The point to remember is that a problem exists for the dreamer that she/he will not even admit to her/himself. And if the dreams are repeated, then it should be clear that it is a problem that is disturbing the dreamer a great deal. It is interesting to note that many people who have a repeated dream often note that it stops when some major problem in their life is solved.

Your brain secretes a hormone when sleeping that prevents the dream activity from actually moving your body parts. Can you imagine how you might thrash around in bed if all you did in your dream was actually happening to your body.

So when you try to run, your body doesn't respond. The feedback of the muscle movement back to your brain is not there. Your brain then has this sluggish running feeling. That is what you experience in the dream. You cannot run because your body is not responding to the commands.

Yes. Everyone does and for a good reason.

When we fall asleep, our bodies go into a form of paralysis. This keeps us from injuring ourselves when we dream.

Such as running. If we were able to ACTUALLY jump out of bed and run, while we were asleep, we wouldn't live long.

In our dreams, when we panic, we want to run.

The panic in our dream brings us up a little closer to a conscious level.

It is THEN, that we actually feel the paralysis, of our not being able to move!

Our dreams feel that paralysis, physically and so our dreams then see that as an inability to run.

We try to run but we can't because our brains have us in lock down mode to protect us from ourselves.

Our dreams see it as..."What the H?...Why can't I run?!"

My mom always said that disturbing dreams were to wake you up to get you to the bathroom.

For me, violent nightmares were my body's way to wake me up because my blood sugar was getting too low (hypoglycemia). I was really tired at work too, along with other symptoms.

If you want to avoid disturbing dreams, before you go to bed, like about 30 minutes before, eat a small snack. I suggest 1-2 oz of turkey (triptophan - spelling approximate), a cracker or a cookie, or if you are concerned about your weight - a low glycemic carbohydrate and some nuts - almonds or peanuts are best. This is a recipe for some slow burning energy that will help level your blood sugar out for the night.

You may want to check out www.hufa.org for more info on low blood sugar, its causes, and things you can do about it.

Some medications and herbals can have side effects. But usually because your body is not supposed to move when your sleeping this flight reaction is like a glitch in your computer like mind. If you had a Mac it might not happen.(I don't really know I don't own one I just like the commercials)

yea and it's like running in slow motion, usually scary to me. I haven't had one like this in a long time, but I do remember them. I dont know what causes it but I suspect it's stress related.
