I think vanilla is a flavor in its own right, unique and distinct. And it is delicious. They have vanilla beans, after all. But people always tell me that vanilla is just plain and flavorless. I think they're insane and should be locked up in an institution. What do you think?

I think it depends on the quality of the vanilla, and the quality of the ice cream or cake.
I agree with you, that really good Tahitian or Ceylonese vanilla is one of the deepest, richest, most complex and intriguing flavors in nature. Combine it with excellent quality cream or other ingredients, and maybe just a mild touch of cinnamon and/or liquor, and you have confections that are truly delicious.
But many junk food manufacturers label high-volume production dreck "vanilla". Also, there is a lot of cheap very poor quality "vanilla extract" on the supermarket shelves these days. I think people who have never enjoyed a well-prepared vanilla gelato, creme brulee, or butter cake made with whole vanilla beans and seeds just don't know what vanilla can really be?

I like vanilla. Ice cream sometimes isn't the most exciting, but it's funny sometimes that with all the different flavors out there, sometimes all you want is vanilla. The vanilla bean is really good. I also like vanilla cake.

There is a vanilla that is in fact plain and boring, however there is the "upper class" vanilla that actually contains vanilla beans/ extract that is very delightful. My opinion is simply.... do what feels good. If you like it go for it, if you think others don't than that leaves more for you. Best wishes

Hey, if it's not chocolate, it's not dessert....
That being said, I agree with you that real vanilla has a great flavor, but most ice cream or cake out there claiming to be vanilla doesn't have much.

Ooh, ooh, ooh! I thought I was all alone. I've been accused of having no taste because I prefer vanilla bean ice cream or shakes. Pardon me for liking vanilla!

It does has a unique flavor.not my fave though.i prefer stronger flavors such as chocolate and strawberry.i think vanilla flavor is like a chameleon flavor.easily blend with a lot of different ingredients.

um yep, plain... but I can see you're point vanilla is it's own unique "flavor" but the fake ice cream is very plain it's more of a "milk" flavor
