Bitter Apple Spray. That is one of the best. Also use Sulfadine on them. That will help heal. You can find all this a Wal-Mart or a vet would have it. Also, it may be the food you feed him, dogs have allergies just like everyone else. Try to find a food with less corn by product. I have a Boston Terrier, she is 1, and we still feed her the puppy chow. Its is what she likes. So find something that he likes, but introduce it to him gradually, or they will get very sick. Also, try just something with beef and chicken, some dogs are allergic to lamb. And increase some of the natural oils by feeding him food with olive oil. Also...how many times do you bathe him, once every 3 weeks is more than enough.

Also try the Mane and Tail shampoo and conditioner. Dont use the Dawn. It is too abrasive for their coats. I should know, I am a beautician. And if it can go on humans it can go on dogs. I give mine a bath in the Mane and Tail, and she doesn't have any problems and she smells great for about a month.

If the condition appears only in the spring and summer, most likely it is a illness called "atopy". Basically it's an allergic reaction, just like hay fever in people. Dogs just don't have the respiratory component of allergies, they only have the skin irritation. My dog has had allergies ever since I adopted her. She had to have steroid injections to reduce the inflammation, and I gave her Benedryl daily. I also shampooed her with a antimicrobial shampoo to reduce any secondary infection. It might help to start your dog on Benedryl. I can't remember the exact dosage ,but you can look it up online or ask your vet. Switching your dog's food to a high quality food meant for dogs with sensitive skin might help, as will adding supplements to your dog's food. I've given my dog a fatty acid supplement as well as brewer's yeast with garlic tablet, and that has helped a lot. I also tried Bitter Apple and that reduced the chewing of her fur. Ultimately, it would be a really good idea to get your dog to a vet. There are worse conditions that can mimic allergic reactions (such as scabies) that your vet needs to check for. Also, they can do blood tests to identify exactly what your dog is allergic to.

sounds like your dog may have a food or environmental allergy. please see the vet. topicals, for allergies, are useless... the allergy is an immune system response to a foreign substance/chemical in the cells and blood stream. if you are feeding a food with corn, wheat or soy, a change of food may be in order. there are grain free foods (EVO is one) that are very good. dogs can also have protein allergies to foods (e.g. lamb, chicken or any other meat or protein like egg). The elimination diets to find this out are really long and cumbersome... 12-16 weeks each on one protein and one carb. and also very expensive. There is a Z/D diet to address food allergies. Talk to your vet about this. It's vet time. No topical can EVER take care of an allergy. It might, with some allergies, give temporary relief but that's it. And vinegar? Hope it was very dilute. It is really stingie if not... like alcohol.

After spending nearly $400 at the vet, a friend told me about Hill Science dog food. They have several varieties - one of which is for sensitive skin. I started feeding this to my dog and no more itching, bare spots, etc. It costs more than Purina and you have to go to a specialty store like Petsmart to get it, but it's simple and really works. By the way, after spending all the money at the vet, my dog still itched and got bare spots until I started feeding her this amazing food.

Both of my dogs have the same problems. They both develop scabs and they itch terrible. I give them benedryl and sometimes if it gets really bad the vet can give them an allergy shot

If your dog has environmental allergies, there are two types of medications used to treat this condition: antihistamines (Benadryl, etc.) and steroids (which require a prescription). Your vet will have to evaluate him and advise you on which medications are best suited for his specific problem, and what dosages are appropriate (they're usually based on body weight).

Do a web search for "atopic dermatitis" for further information on the subject.

My dog has allergies also, mainly in the summertime. I feed him california natural lamb & rice food. The Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids are good for the skin & coat, important for dogs prone to itchy skin. It seems to help.
