A person charged with a crime is usually charged because there is sufficient evidence to charge the person with said crime. Now the next step is to hold the suspect until they can be properly arraigned by a judge and the charges presented to a grand jury. Depending on the crime the judge either set immediate bail or sends the case to a grand jury who determines the exact charges then back to the judge to set bail.
The initial jail time is to hold a "suspect" in custody until it is determined whether they are a serious risk to society or flight risk from justice.
That's why - by the way that was not a stupid question; although some of the answers provided were done without reading your question and understanding it.

Im guessing you mean why is the person in jail when they have only been charged with the crime and not yet sentenced. Probably because they cant afford to post bail.

To protect society. Even if you didn't do it, there is enough evidence to suggest that you did. Rather than taking a chance that you will strike again, they control your movements. This actually protects both society, and you. No one can blame you for additional crimes while you are in custody.
