I am looking for some kind of monitor that my parents can wear around their neck like a necklace, that is water proof as well. So that when they fall, they can push the button on it and it will make a loud noise like a siren or something. I don't want the kind that calls the alert system, I just want something that is loud so when they push the button I will hear it and know that one of them is down.

You see I live on the same land as they do. Dad is 83 and mom is 72. We have 2 acres of land here and they do get around some. Both have had strokes, so I moved here to take care of them. I just want something that has a siren or something on it so when they push the button I will hear it and find them. I don't want any medical alert system in this. Neither one of them can use a cell phone either since they both have had a stroke.

this is kind of like the mini air horn to protect against date rape, but its a keychain that has a flashlight on it and when you pull out the end of the flash light it emmits a high pitched alarm, i got mine for a dollar at a dollar store. also a small walkie talkie would be good because most of them have call features so if you're far away they can still contact you, the only problem with those is you have to make sure the batteries are charged. good luck and i hope you're parents dont fall again : )

How about a cell phone. You can get a family plan, and they don't even have to live with you. They can put you on speed dial and only have to push that number, and the call button. My elderly (73 yr old) husband carries his phone with him even when he mows the yard. He puts it on the side of the tub when he takes his shower. We both feel better now. If a neighbor or the ambulance would be a better call, he can also do that. I wish my dad had a cell phone when he broke his leg in his back yard. He had a very large yard, and he called for my mom. She came to the door. He yelled for her to get the riding mower. She knew she always had to check the fluid levels before she started the mower, so she did, she added some gas, put the grass catcher on it, and drove it to him. Only then did she realize he was hurt and only wanted the mower to get to the house! Well we laughed about that one for years! At the time, though, if he had a phone on his belt, it would have saved him a lot of time, and my mom a lot of work! Maybe someone out there knows about the monitor you're looking for. I hope you enjoyed my little (true) story.

I had a simuliar problem while staying with a cousin in the hills in Oregon. He is mentally handicapped and I was asked to stay with him while my aunt (his guardian) took a vacation.
He was prone to tripping and has injured himself many times while walking the trials alone. He is also 10 years my senior and insists on being independant. I went to a local toy store and purchased a set of waterproof walkie-talkies(handheld radio transmitters). They have a range of 2 miles and are very suitable for the purpose. I would reccomend checking online for a proffesional set. Some even have a side mounted button below the send button that emits a signal which is very loud to the person on the other end. Many emergency workers rely heavily on these devices and can attribute many saved lives to them.

OK, I know this may sound totally lame, but here goes. Would an air horn work? I know it would be kind of cumbersome, but it might do the trick. See if there is a boating supply place around you that has it. Even if you have to fashion a belt that it goes in, you would be able to hear them if they blew them. Good luck! That's so scarey. But all the Life Alert type things do go straight to a response center.

Look at the web site www.phones4life.org
.
They provide free of charge cell phones to elderly individuals and victims of domestic violence. They will provide a cell phone with 100 free minutes and that is programmed with up to 5 "In case of emergency" phone numbers. Or they will provide a cell phone that can only be used to call "911".
If you do not have access to the Web you can call the service center at 818-236-2704 for assistance in filling out an application.

If they are adept at pushing a single button, the Migo cellphone that is designed for kids to call only 4 preselected numbers plus 911 is good. I got it for my mom and it's fine as long as she keeps it with her. That's the big problem with any of these devices... If they won't keep it with them or around their neck religiously the purpose is defeated.
If you are going to be in the immediate vicinity, how about one of those personal protection mini-air horns that are designed for women to carry on their keychain in event of a threatening situation?

I would call ADT. They can give your folks a pendant to hit that will immediately dispatch the right emergency response. ADT will also call you if the system is activated. You can also monitor critical levels in the house such as Co levels, water levels, and temp. Hope this was helpfull.

I would bet the AARP has a store on their website that sells that sort of thing. Googling for health monitors or health alert or panic buttons may get you quite a bit of information.

Why sure I do , I would suggest tying a rope around the neck of the parent in question, yet not to tight so as to cut off circulation , but snug enough to remind them not to fall , because when they fall the rope will ring a very very loud cow bell that will annoy the neighbors so much that they will take care of fallen old person themselves so as not to wreck your day with their problems. It works for me. ! : )
