I use a special treats as a reward (one that he normally doesn't get)... the dog only gets it when he/she goes OUTSIDE.

Put the dog on a leash and take it outside to the area you want him to do his business. Say something like "go pee" or "go poop" over and over. When the dog goes, then I carry on like I the Publishers Clearing House Prize Van just pulled in to my driveway!!!! And, I give the treat right there on the spot!

Keep this up for a few days. I know it's a pain to have to take him out each time, but if you want to train him to use a specific area, this will work.

Also, keep the area clean. Be sure to pick up the poop, and if you go a couple of days without rain, hose the area down. Most dogs won't go in "unclean" areas!!!

It's important that you pay very close attention to the dog. Keeping it leashing inside with her will help with this. If you can't be right there, then you should crate the dog.

You should take the dog out frequently. If you doesn't know what times he/she generally needs to potty, then keeping a log might help.

It pretty much comes down to being consistent. Taking your pet out regularly and encouraging him to go in the area you've chosen will do the trick with time and patience. Some people find putting a bit of his "business" in the spot works to remind the dog that, that's where he's supposed to go. When housebreaking my dog I wanted him to use the back 20 feet of our yard so took him back there on his lead frequently to avoid accidents. I referred to the spot as the "bush" so when he was ready to go on his own (my yard is fenced) I'd remind him to go "in the bush" and he'd go. The only thing I didn't anticipate was with my pooch he wouldn't go anywhere else so if I took him into town for a car ride and he had to go he would cry until I took him back to the house. Just wouldn't use anything that didn't resemble his spot - sidewalk grass wasn't an option.

That.. I am afraid.. is not possible. You might try two different things .. these are:

1) spray clorox in the area.. for some reasons, dogs like clorox

2) If you can get the dog over there.... and he does his job.. give him a treat and keep doing this every day for a long time and maybe it will learn that way but do not count on it.

Really you dont have to train most dogs, at least mine does it naturally. Just dont give them much room to roam if you have them in a pin or on a chain and if you walk them on the leash take them to the same spots, they will sniff that same spot and go there.

This may sound cruel. (I have never done this, but am told that it works)

To train your dog to go in a certain place:
when he goes, use a rollled newspaper and tap him on the nose and walk him to the area you want him to use...

If this doesn't work after a couple of tries:

gently press his nose in the poop and then take him and the poop to the area you want him to use...

you put your dog on a leash, and walk it around the perimeter of your yard. You let him know where his boundaries are and usually because a dog doesn't like to go on it's own property,it will go on the outskirts of the yard. When he does praise him for a good job, even give a doggie treat and he will learn. You have to be really persistant at first but it will catch on.

Reward him every time he uses the proper place. Gently scold him when he uses the wrong area. Shouldn't take too long for him to get the idea, if he's at all intelligent.
