Any time I drink a diet soda, or eat or drink anything else with artificial sweeteners (seemingly any type), I find myself with a headache, unable to think clearly, dizzy, and lightheaded. Other people tell me that I'm crazy. Is this a relatively common affliction, and what might the cause be?

Aspartame consists of two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine, which are both excitatory neurotransmitters. What is happening is that your brain is getting over-stimulated. Much better for you to drink water and eat a piece of fruit.

It sounds like it could be aspartame poisoning. No doctor will ever find it. It is good that you have stopped MSG. Dr. Russell Blaylock wrote a book called, "Excitotoxins, The Taste That Kills". In it he calls MSG and aspartame excitotoxins. One problem is that msg is in almost every prepared food and aspartame is in over 5,000 foods, mainly low fat, fat free and low calorie or diet foods and drinks. I looked at the ingredients listed on a carton of low fat yogurt. It listed four different artificial sweeteners. The first link is to a page that lists some of the side effects of aspartame and the second link is to a video that tells the story of several people who were poisoned and misdiagnosed. If this is the problem, some people have been able to recover just by avoiding the damn stuff. Airline pilots are warned not to drink diet sodas. One pilot died in the cockpit from a seizure caused by aspartame. Over three fourths of the complaints received by the FDA have been on the effects of aspartame.

Fibromyalgia and hypoglycemia sometime after I started drinking diet pop and using other sugar-free products. I began getting dizzy alot and had a nagging headache.
Two months ago I received an email about the effects of aspartame. I immediately quit using any artifical sweetners and the headaches and dizziness stopped. My muscles even feel better and the chest pains have stopped. They can mimicke a heart attack from the fibromyalia. More people need to be warned about the use of any artificial sweetners.

After 15 years of drinking diet soda and chewing sugar free gum and using all kinds of aspartame-laden products, I finally paid the price.
Last year I started to have typical Aspartame poisoning symptoms. Doctors could not figure out what was wrong with me. My symptoms included rapid heart rate, panic attacks, blurred vision, joint pain, chronic fatique, tremors, back and leg pain, migraine headaches, dizziness and a whole slew of other lovely symptoms.

I was so tired I could not get out of bed and when I did I could hardly walk. My only option was to try to figure this out on my own and when I discoverd through the Internet the dangers of Aspartame, I knew right away that Aspartame was causing me to be sick.

I stopped using it, and right away noticed improvemen
It's been a year and I am better, but not 100 percent. My health and my life has been ruined by aspartame and I will probably never be the same healthy energetic person I was.

Aspartame was in 1996. I was a little overweight and I wanted to lose a few pounds and so I started working out (swimming and weights) and to relieve my thirst I started drinking Crystal Light instead of my usual iced tea. I was drinking about a gallon a day. After about three months the weight was starting to drop off drastically. I thought WOW! this is great. Little did I know what I was in for.
Soon I was having trouble with my vision being blurry and was extremely photosensitive. I went to see my family physician and as soon as I walked through the door he stated he knew exactly what was wrong. He ran some blood tests and sent me immediately to an endocronologist. The endo found my body temp was 101 and my heart rate was 160 and it turned out I had Graves disease (hyperthyrodism).

I was put on beta blockers, and prednisone to bring my heart rate and swelling (of the eye muscles) down.

After about two years of medication, the Graves finally went into remission although I still have photosensitivity. All this time neither I or my doctor's could figure out how this got started.
About three years after that, I started another diet and began drinking Crystal Light again. Almost immediately, my thyroid started acting up. I went back to the doctor and between us, we figured out that the only commonality was the drinking of Crystal Light. He told me to stop immediately and within 4-6 weeks all my symptoms were again in remission.

I will never touch anything with Aspartame in it again and anyone I see eating or drinking it are warned of it's toxic affects and what it did to me.

It is not crazy. In fact, my sister gets headaches from aspartame used in drinks such as diet coke also. Though the reason is not quite known, aspartame is on the top list of head triggers. A study at the Univ. of Florida showed aspartame boosted headaches in half the participants. It does not affect everyone. For example, I can use it like there is not tommorrow and not realize how much I have had. Everyone has a different body and therefore reacts to all foods differently. The only to "fix" your problem is avoidance.
