some dogs when bored or lonely will lick and chew on thier legs or elbows and can really make them sore sometimes bloody.do not let it get infected. do u leave your dog alone alot? does he get lots of excercise to keep his mind off the licking and chewing? if not try giving him things to do. get a hard plastic bottle and fill it full of dog food kibbles. leave the top off . put some bigger kibble in it or some treats that will be hard to get out of the hole. when u are gone give this to him and he will stay busy trying to get the kibbles and treats out. when you are home with him put it up untill you leave again. I have seen dogs re ally work hard and even throw these up in the air. when bottle starts looking badly chewed and destroyed time to make a new one this will keep his mind off of the licking. also get him checked for allergies. he could be itchy. you can try small plastic pop bottles with narrow necks so not to much falls out.also get him in for some antibiotics.

Sometimes pets lick themselves in the same spots because of an irritant and sometimes out of "habit" - either way it can definitely lead to something more serious. The first thing you need to do it check the area to see if there is anything minor you can fix prior to a vet visit. Make sure the area is free of any twisted/matted hair - that sort of pulling will cause the surrounding skin to become irritated which makes a dog lick it. I would clean the elbow and cover it until you can make a trip to the pet store for a topical cream - some creams come with a bitter taste so pets refrain from the incessant licking.

He may be allergic to flea bites. Fleas don't live on the3 dog, they hop on to feed then hop off and live in your carpet! Bath him in dog shampoo or Johnsons No More Tears or Johnsons Baby bath. Vacuum thoroughly every day. Treat the house for fleas. Treat him with Advantix K9 spot on flea treatment (you can get it from Amazon). Make sure you worm him every 6 months for tapeworm, and treat him for roundworm as well. After that, if he's no better in 2 weeks, see the vet. Ask your vet if heartworm is a problem in your area while you are there.

My dog licks also. Mainly his paws. I normally put bag balm on the raw spot & wrap it with an ace bandage so he can't lick anymore. Of course you'll have to keep an eye on him cuz he'll try his best to remove the bandage.

sounds like a hot spot.

i'd clean it well, and apply a hot spot ointment with lidocain. wrap it just for 2 days, then see if hes stopped licking. If not, you can use grannicks bitter apple spray or elizabethan collar

Just take the dog to the vet! Your dog is obviously in discomfort and needs your help. And a vet office visit isn't expensive.

Could be he has a hot spot, which can be treated with a drying powder prescribed by a veterinarian; or, he might have mange, which can be treated with an injection of Ivermectin from your veterinarian.
