If you are install a new operating system on a harddrive, you will probably want to erase that entire hard drive and start with a fresh install. If that's what you are doing you will lose all the files on your harddrive, including music and pictures. What you should do is transfer these files to DVD, CD, or another harddrive and them reload them to your current harddrive after you install XP. It is nothing like installing a printer

If you buy the upgrade version of XP all it will do is write over the ME operating system files with its own files. How fast it installs is dependent on the speed of your CPU, and some other factors, but usually, if all goes well, figure on an hour or two for the process. Bear in mind that some older programs on your pc that run under ME may have some difficulty with XP, so be prepared for that. I'd strongly suggest you read about the whole process at the below link, which is far too lengthy to give you here. Good luck.

I upgraded from ME to XP. It left my personal files. I had a slow processor, so it took about 3 hours. This was for a true upgrade, NOT a wipe and install. Longer, but not harder, than installing a printer.

It is fairly easy, but not like installing a printer. It should take an hour or so.
Back up your data first, it shouldn't be erased, but do it just in case.

You insert the CD and run it. It's not the same as installing a printer, but it walks you through the whole process. Worst case, you might have to reinstall some programs afterward, but you won't lose any files.

You wont lose your files but you may need hardware that you don't have.
It is a pain.
I tried it and took it back.
Too much work for me.
