Shell, it means "laugh on line," like I really need someone telling me when to laugh. Yes and I do understand that it's meant to denote humor...
The first answerer is correct it takes very little to bother me. You can imaginge I walk around all the time with my knickers in a twist!

Hey, I was a cheese yellow Corvette before I was upgraded to a toaster unit! You knew me? Wow, that makes me want to laugh out loud, or something! Heh, heh, heh. Nah, I'm just yanking your chain. I really wasn't a cheese yellow Corvette before I was upgraded. I was one of those annoying laugh boxes. Man, I hope your humor drive didn't just break. Mine's just starting to spin! It's just a shorthand way of Laughing Out Loud.
It is overused in some circles the same way that some folks laugh too much at contrived humor. On the other hand, when used judiciously as part of a set of online expressions, it may augment communication thus effectively increasing bandwidth.
