It's is called communion because it is what unites us as a community.
At least in the Catholic Church it is....not for the protestants who reject the 6th chapter of the Gospel of John.

Actually, if you ever study theology there is a lot of discussion about communion....communion with God and communion with one another in the community. It is called the horizontal and vertical dimensions of liturgy. St. Paul is the one that speaks of it the most.

The term Communion is derived from Latin communio (sharing in common). The corresponding term in Greek is κοινÏνία, which is often translated as "fellowship".
In Christianity, the term communion has two meaningins both of which derive from Eucharistic theology:
1. ) As relationship with a church, to be in communion means literally to share a common faith to such an extent that a person, group or another church is welcome to share the Eucharist, or Communion with that church. Charches in communion with one another are understood to have this inter-relationship while maintaining a certain indepedence and separate identity.
1. ) As an experience of ones relationship with God, the term communion has mystical overtones implying a Eucharistic metaphor to other kinds of spiritual experiences of closeness or oneness with God, other people or as a Church.

communion really comes from the last supper. all the apostles were gathered together and it was a super holy time. communion is the same in church. the congregation is gathered and it's a super holy time. the 'community' is you and your fellow church goers. and you're celebrating your faith.

Because it is the time when christians come together as the community (body of Christ) to remember the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. During this time we commune with Him by accepting what He did on Calvary for us.
