You have an excellent point.
The old testament does say that there is salvation, and it was written before Jesus. Honestly, the whole "Jesus saves" thing is a fabrication, because God is perfectly capable of it Himself. God is all-forgiving, all-merciful, and you can contact him directly without any intermediary.
Furthermore, why would Jesus say something so blasphemous on the cross? I am a Muslim, formerly a Christian, and believe that Jesus did not die on the cross, but was risen and saved. Think about it. Right before the Romans came to arrest him, he was praying in the Garden of Gethsemone. "Let this cup pass from me, but let it be Your will, not my own," he called out.
I do not mean to offend Christians or to impose my beliefs on anyone. I am glad to see that you are reading the Bible for yourself, and encourage you to continue doing so to familiarize yourself with its contents.

Lol, no, God requires a tit-for-tat, not just giving something for nothing. You MUST understand that there are LARGER forces than just "us" and "God" at work here. There is also the Heavenly and Satanic Forces watching this play out. Adam was a perfect man, nothing more, nothing less = Jesus, the Christ was a perfect man (on earth) nothing more, nothing less. God requires that an equal sacrifice be paid for all sins and when Christ (the annointed died, our sins were paid "once and for all times") and this means that anytime we sinned, as long as we were humble and sorry for it, we could approach God in prayer and get forgiveness (as long as we first forgave others!!!), otherwise he put a "cloud like mass in front of Him to block out our prayers from him." (Lamentations 3:44) Proving that not all prayers are acceptable to him unless he's approached with a good heart and a kind disposition.
The reason "this" is all happening isn't because Adam sinned, but because of Satan. Satan CHALLENGED God's RIGHT TO RULE, not anything else. Anything else, God could have simply wiped Satan off of Heaven's map for and looked around and said "You guys got a problem with that?" I don't think anyone, AND I MEAN ANYONE would have let out a peep, would you? However, by challenging God's Right-to-rule, Satan set up the "PERFECT Challenge" and EVERYONE WAS WATCHING. God couldn't just say, "go away." There had to be a response to this, and we're paying for it now.
What do I mean? Simple. We've had Anarchy, Matriarchy, Patriarchy, Theocracy, Fascism, Nazism, Communism, Kingships, Principalities, Dukedoms, Sheikdoms, Empires, Czars, Ceasars, Empresses, Queens, Arch-Dukes, and on and on all day, however, not one, NOT ONE has led to a stable man made government that has LASTED THROUGHOUT the millenia. All have failed us. And this is proof that Satan is a liar. It has taken 6,000 years, but God has proven HIS point, ONLY HIS RULE can LAST FOREVER. Sad, isn't it? Everyone thinks all this is about suffering and eating a piece of fruit, when it could have been over 2,000 years ago had Satan not opened his mouth. Then again, I wouldn't have been born, so I'm pretty happy with the results.

You just don't understand the Plan of God's Salvation.
God is so holy that the lambs and sacrifices that were killed in the Old Testament was not enough to take sin away, only cover sin.
It was a temporary atonement for the sins of the people, but one day the True Sacrificial Lamb came and His Holy Blood not only covered but took away the sins of the world. That was Jesus, our Sacrificial Lamb.
When we believe that, and apply that Bloody Word to our hearts by ACTING like we believe It, then That makes it so.
God could ONLY forgive us and let us enter heaven by cleansing us with His Own Blood.
He became His Own Son by coming to the earth as a Babe who grew and died on Calvary.
If you only knew the Power of the Blood of Jesus Christ...
I guess it doesn't matter if one just reads the Bible.
One has to fall in love with the Author of the Bible which is God Himself, in order to understand It.
When Jesus cried out , "Father why hast Thou forsaken me" It was the flesh that was crying out.
Jesus was not only God but a man that felt pain.
And nobody ever was tortured like He was...
But when He rose on Easter Sunday, that was more than a man, that was God Himself.
Every day God forgives us.
He forgives our ignorance for not understanding
His Word and saying things about Him that borders on blasphemy.
He forgives us time and again...
But one day if we cross the line...there shall be no forgiveness neither here nor in the world to come.

We won't know all that till Heaven.
But I am sure it has to do with the way he set up worship w/his people. For sin...there had to be a blood sacrifice. It had to be a lamb without blemish.
If you ever study about that or see how that was all done in the Temple you might, might, understand a bit of it.
There is a place in Eureka Springs, Ark. that has the Christ of the Ozarks. Also there is a replica of the wilderness Tabernacle. A real Rabbi there takes you thru it and tells about it. They also have a tape on it..
He is HOLY...do we even comprehend what that means?
There is NO WAY He can look upon sin. He could not look at us if it were not for the BLOOD.
We have NO respect for His holiness. It is an awsome thing we cannot understand. IF we did, we would be on our knees ALL THE TIME.
He does not have to forgive us, He could just let us be and allow us to go to Hell. But for Jesus' sake He doesn't.

You want to believe in a loving and merciful God, but not a just God? God's justice called for a 'sacrifice.' God's love and mercy allowed His Son to willingly lay down His life for our sins.
And on the Cross Jesus is not asking why God has forsaken Him. He is reciting a common Jewish prayer from the Book of Psalms which begins: "Oh my God, why has thou forsaken me..." Remember, Jesus was a Jew. Pilate had that inscribed above the Cross of Christ three times: JESUS THE NAZARENE KING OF THE JEWS, in Latin, Hebrew and Greek.
Your comment that God is unable or unwilling to forgive is erroneous. This is what happens when you try to self-interpret the Bible. But I am glad that you didn't get your question from a movie.

GOD is a righteous God. He cannot just say ok, your sin is forgiven. Yes, He wants to forgive us (very badly) but He has to find a just way to do it. The only way is someone (without sin) take our place and be judged.
Yes God forsaken Jesus at the cross because Jesus took our place as a sinner. In replace, Jesus gave us His position as a Child of God. And God will NEVER forsake us.

I understand why you would see Christ's death in this way. Let me explain why He had to die for our sins:
From the beginning of time, God established that sins had to be atoned (paid for) by blood. During the "Old Testiment" times, God's children offered sacrifices for forgiveness (as well as for thanksgiving and praise). God in His divine power and wisdom decided to send His Son to the earth to be an everlasting sacrifice, so that His children would no longer need to offer up animal sacrifices for atonement of sin. So God told his prophets all about how He would send His Son, and these prophesies are located all through the Old Testiment. His children were waiting and praying for their Messiah who would lift the burden of sacrifices off of them. So when Jesus came to earth and offered Himself, that's exactly what happened. He became the eternal sacrifice - and the most powerful also because He was raised from the dead.
I know you may say to yourself, "Well, if God is so powerful, than why didn't He just change the rules and say that sacrifice wasn't needed anymore?" He couldn't do that because God cannot change - it's outside of who He is.
But know this - Jesus Christ doesn't regret what He chose to do. He did it out of love for you and I and He is alive and well and at the right hand of His Father in heaven today!

This is an ego interpretation of God and Jesus; we need to be careful. The biblical texts of the New Testament were those that were the most popular interpretation of Jesus' message. Since his message of unconditional love was (and stll isn't) acceptable to how we think, the message was changed. Therefore, his death becomes one of redemption/sacrifice for our 'sins', thus making god into a cruel, stern father that sacrifices his only son. It's ridiculous but it fits our human idea of justice and sacrifice and 'ego love'. It's not true; God (Unconditional Love) is not like that.

The problem is that, as Creator and Judge of the universe, the buck stops with God when it comes to making sure that every action gets its due. So the question is, how can God forgive us while at the same time making sure that every wrong thing we do receives the just punishment it deserves? The answer is that Jesus, being sinless, served as our substitute upon the cross to take our sins upon himself and die for them -- i.e., he took the punishment for our sins so that we could be forgiven by God if we accept by faith his sacrifice on our behalf. If we receive Jesus as Savior by faith, then he takes upon himself the punishment due our sins, and we are freed, but if we don't, then our sins will remain upon us, and we will be punished in hell for them. So we each have a choice: to be saved through faith in Jesus Christ, letting him take the penalty of our sin upon himself, or to be lost forever, suffering eternally for our own sins because we passed by the free gift of forgiveness which God purchased for us with the blood of his own Son.
