Dengue is only spread through Aedes mosquito bites and not through personal contact. Aedes exist in the US , and even if your friend got it in the Caribbean snd came home, there is still a chance of thransmission through US mosquitoes, though it is small.

It sounds strange to say, but the mosquitoes you want to avoid are the ones that bit her ABOUT A WEEK AGO. It takes that long before a mosquito which has picked up the virus from an infected person can spread it through another bite. So dont worrry too much a mosquito that bits you both on the same day. (Take a long road trip together- you'd have nothing to fear.)

You should use mosquito control while you are both together. Aedes bites by day.

Because there is not a vaccine for dengue fever, travelers should:
avoid mosquito bites by using insect repellents on skin and clothing.
stay in well screened or air conditioned areas.
When sleeping areas are not air conditioned or screened, the use of aerosol insecticides indoors and bednets are recommended.no its not passed from one person to another.
