As was mentioned earlier, do your research. I'm a professional bird trainer in a zoo and I get calls every day from people wanting to give up their birds. Birds require more than what most people expect. If you really want one, start with a small species like a cockatiel or a love bird. The larger parrots have a number of things to consider: they are extremely overpriced in the pet shops ($100's to $1000's), they live a very long time (Macaws can go 50-70 years), they need tons of social interaction (if not the bird may develop severe behavioral problems), they tend to be quite loud (usually at sunrise and sunset), they are very destructive and will destroy anything they can get that beak on (their beaks are made of keratin so they will continually grow, chewing keeps them trimmed up), their food gets very expensive (I do have 3 birds at home and they cost me a bundle in pellets, fruits, veggies, and other treats), finding a veterinarian can be tricky too as not many vets practice avian medicine. I could go on and on, just make sure you know what you are getting into. Keep in mind, there are just as many unwanted birds out there as there are dogs and cats. Look into a bird rescue group before you go out and purchase one. Good Luck!

whichever u choose do your research beforehand ok.
so many people buy birds and then they think that they r looking after it so wonderfully beacause they are fed seed and water. NOT
All birds need wide variety of food, they should have 1 source greens/vegies, another fruits/nuts, then a premium seed, (if not a nectar feeding bird) fresh water, ask your pet shop for advice on how to care 4 your new bird/s, they are supposed to have knowledge of this.
Consider size of bird
Enclosure size, (which should be more wider than taller, tall skinny cages are crap, crap, crap and so r those pissy little cages that thick people put a budgie in, unbelievable. Birds fly sideways not up and down.
And i try to emphasise to people that housing a bird in a cage that doubles their wing size when outstretched is like being kept in a toilet sized room for their entire life. And some of these birds will live 4 up to 20+ years. How b l o o d y miserable.
Remember your bird will need worming
Toys
Need to have access to sunlight as well as shade
Natural branches
Fresh tree foliage (they looooove it.)

Do your homework
Your job is to make your new birds life happy and fulfilled, not a mere existance.
so many things to consider
I hope u make the right choice

i have chickens, conures, lovebirds and more and i love them all!!!!! Its yhou decition just dont o to a petshop unless you want to rescue and pay large prices for your birds. Look at www.upatsix.com or www.birdsnways.com for listing they are safe and away from scammers which are common on the net!!! You can also make homemade toys etc.. so a conure is the best and smart pet i believe but if your just starting i reccomend a lovebird or ckckatiel or even chickens!! LOL! I have a blind chicken and a hurt baby chick and i love them noth! They are sweet and most loyal and they come when i call their names! LOL! ducks the same way!!! Lovebirds and cockatiels can both talk to but dont buy a bird for talking but for love!!!!!! I rescue and iknow how hard it is to take care of animals and its so easy to get over your head. But goodluck and this may not be the case for you. Hope this helps.. kaila

I think that if u are new to birds u should get a parakeet. If you have a lot of time during the day, like 7 to 8 hours you can tach them to talk and perch on ur finger and stuff

I am partial to eclectus parrots. They are a large bird, about amazon size. The males have the speaking ability of an african grey. They are GORGEOUS and fairly quiet for a parrot.
I've had an african grey for about 10 year. I've had tiels, parakeets...blah blah. Eclectus hands down.

Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) - tiny Australian parakeet. But make sure it's a very young male, that is one - one and a half month old. If you talk to it on daily basis, it will speak, after 3-4 months old. Enjoy!
