Most police departments have an Academy where the training can last from a few weeks to six months. Many now require at least and Associates degree before they hire you. The training is tough, and becoming a police officer is a lifestyle change.
Apply to as many departments as you are qualified for, as many cities, states, and counties differ on how quickly they hire new officers. Often, there are civil service lists of candidates who passed an entrance exam, and it could be many months to a couple of years before they go through the entire list. Look on line for the websites of police departments you are interested in for their hiring requirements.

Depending on where you live most departments require at least a high school degree, 45 hours of college and/or honorable military discharge, or a college degree. In Texas, most academys last 7 months. You must have a good background and be in semi-good shape. Good Luck.

It varies from state to state and even jurisdiction. In California where I am from you must past a POST Certified Academy which can be done in about 18 weeks. Then some jurisdictions require an AA degree and a few require a BA/BS (very few). In most cases you can certainly get on with an Academy certificate only.

I live in Colorado and the only thing we have to do is an academy about 4months long. And yes a degree will help you find a good job.

Most police departments require a degree to join. Sometimes an Associates in Criminology, sometimes a B.A. in anything.
