Hi, you request to go into a mental hospital. However having just come out after six months involuntary detention a section 3, I would not recommend it. The NHS resources are stretched to bursting point. Mental Health wards are full of the acutely ill and the only help on offer is medication. Most people wander round like Zombies. I was severely damaged by the process. I was not allowed out and was abused constantly by staff. I would love to complain but who will believe a "mentally ill" person.
Try to deal with your difficulties at home. Every area of the UK has a crisis team whose job is to support people with a mental illness in the community.
You can ask your local Mental Health team to assess you and see if you qualify for support.
Believe me a psychiatric hospital is something I wouldn't wish on anyone

The simple answer is NO. First u would have to be referred by your GP to a psychiatrist should they think it a necessity; You would then be assesed by the psychciatrist in the outpatients department. This may take more than one visit. After your assesment has been completed in full the psychiatrist will determine whether or not u are really menatally ill and what if any form of mental illness u suffer from. Mental illness is usually long term and consists of ppl who suffer the following illness : Schizophenia, Bi-Polar and Clinical depression.
The patients mentioned above CAN self-refer but even they have to go through an assesment as soon as possible and can only refer to their own Consultant.
There are many types of depression and as a professional psychiatric doctor it sounds to me as though u may be going through a rough period and as a result are left feeling depressed.
However bad u may feel please know that DEPRESSION CAN BE BEATEN. Referals are not made unless it is absolutely necessary and various other methods have been tried first.
There are self help groups run by the N.H.S. and groups set up by ppl who have suffered depression and beaten it and wish to help others do the same.
Believe me a Mental Heath Ward is the last place u should want to be all other avenues should be considered first. If u have not already done so please talk to your doctor and explain how u are feeling before u consider anything else. May i wish u all the very best in advance.

Yes, and no. Section 131 of the Mental Health Act says that nothing in the act will prevent anyone who requires treatment for a mental disorder from being admitted; however, there may be no spaces and the 'illest' get priority. You will need to be diagnosed.

The usual place a person gets treated now is in the community, by a Community Psychiatric Nurse (CPN). The patient is referred to the mental health service through their GP.

I don't know of any NHS asylums now since the Community Care Act. You could go private, but it's very expensive.

Even if you can (i think you can with a referral from the local mental health outreach team) remember the waiting lists. Also remember the people treating the stars get paid good money to make them better. The only ones getting good money in the NHS are managment and they no treat you on the floor. take care 'n' be lucky

Only if you are diagnosed with a mental illness maybe severe depression or continuous suicide attempts. I think you need to go private and pay to be admitted to a mental hospital. I'm sure there are special programs out in the country though that are for that. I think if you really need it though, you'd be prepared to travel to another part of the UK to find one. If you do find out let me know, I might need it soon!

You obviously live in the UK and Americans don't know your legal rights. I advise you to go to or phone your nearest NHS (National Health Service--I don't know what STARS means) office and ask them about your concern and apparent desire or believed need.

I am guessing here but it is likely the appropriate receiving agency will want to examine you for actual need(s). Cooperate with them and DON'T delay in this. You obviously feel a real need here, for yourself or for someone near and dear. Move promptly in resolving this issue.

Best wishes, and remember--prayer can be answered.

well i believe so. hey why not. Its been one of my greatest wishes. If no one will let u, u should take them to court and declare u are mentally unstable. Tell them u have a right to be insane. Just scream if u aren't sure if u are getting thru to them. I have this pending application to a mental hospital in Australia and they are reviewing my cases. have a lovely day mate.

You don't need a mental hospital... you might just need to get away from it all for a while to take your mind off everything. Don't sit at home waiting for the next bad thing to happen to you, do something adventurous you've always wanted to do!!

yes, if they have a bed for you and you seem out of it enough to be a danger to yourself or others because of a mental health condition. however, if they think you are a danger or at risk, even though you volunteered yourself into hospital, they can keep you there if they feel they need to assess and observe your condition. i think they would need to section you for this, i believe, but i am not clued up enough about this so dont take my word for it.

Approach your local A+E and tell them you require mental health assistance. They will get you a psych assessment and judging by your current mood ,admission to a hospital.
