Im worried about my flight being delayed too long. Is it possible that the airline would allow me to get on an earlier flight if there is available seats? If so it wouldnt cost extra would it?

Most American carriers do charge a small fee (25). Often times they will waive the fee depending on what type of fare you are on. However, your checked luggage goes ahead on your scheduled flight after you, so you will end up waiting around for that anyway.

Nearly all airlines will allow you to fly standby on an earlier flight, as long as it is the same day. Just show up at the gate you'd like to leave from and ask. It also helps to check availability of the earlier flights. If you call the airline and tell them you're thinking about going standby on Flight X, they'll usually tell you if you've got a good shot at getting on based on availability.

Some will if the flight still has available seats on it and it shouldn't cost you anything more unless you upgrade your seat. Again, it also depends on where you are flying out of. Some airports have some seriously nasty flight people at their counters where others will bend over backwards for you. Happy, safe, trip!!

The last time I did this they charged me $100. for changing my flight. I moved it forward a day, though. Another time they asked for volunteers, and that was free.
It doesn't cost to ask. If the earlier flight is not full, and the one you want off is, they will probably do it for free.

Yes they can at no extra charge, but keep in mind they do have to have the available seat and will not bump another passenger that has already made earlier arrangements.

No it doesnt cost extra. You just ask them to put you on the waiting list, and if there's an earlier seat available they will move you

I once was not allowed to board an earlier flight because I had already checked in my luggage for the original flight. So don't check in your luggage!

the airline can put you on an earlier flight if their rules permit that...but not if they can't retrieve your luggage and move it as well...you and your luggage MUST (this is a federal aviation law) be on the same flight for security reasons.
