Turkey that is below 98.6 degrees F (hence cold to the eater)

It is also a "slang" term for quitting suddenly. Usually referring to a bad habit like smoking, or using heroin.

It simply means that in order to break the addiction they simply stop using the drug and deal with consequences and pain of doing so with pure will power.

It is essentially a metaphor for ending something suddenly and with out preparation or "toning it down" to any degree. Such as weening yourself off of heroin with morphine and suboxyn.

For example using a quit smoking gum or patch would not be considered quitting cold turkey.

"cold turkey" usually has a much lower success rate than any other standard method of quitting, but it can work with enough determination and will power.

It's what the Turkey is when you take it out of the Fridge. No, really it means stopping something without any help. It refers to Smoking, and other bad habits. Example, I quit cold turkey. My dad quit Smoking cold turkey, by throwing his cigarettes out the car window and never smoked again.

I think most people gave you a correct answer with the meaning of stopping something abruptly as opposed to gradually. This definition usually implies without any assistance and usually in regards to substance abuse. But I think JilF's example is hard to believe because I have never know anyone who had smoked "cold turkey." She gave that up. How would you roll that up anyway? I'm confused???

If you were to say "I gave up smoking cold turkey," It would mean the same as "I gave up smoking completely, all at once."
