When exercising, is it a good thing to work through "the burn" or is it better to rest a second or two and let "the burn" go away before continuing?

When I was a member of a health club, the staff advised to rest two to three minutes between sets of weights. They said it was highly beneficial, and that if you didn't rest those few minutes you really would not get as good as a workout. After years of using that approach, I tend to agree. I'm not sure I would now be able to press the weight I do if I had not rested. It's also a good idea to alternate your days when lifting weights. Work on your upper body one day, and your lower body the next.

I know this one.. I'm a power lifter 53/F, as is my husband. He's got a l4 machine gym. He tells me to push myself (go for the burn, yeah) and go for more weights, fewer reps. Me.. (I'm half his size.. a trim l20, man) I think I do better work when I follow the second half of your questiojn and go for the burn, rest a secon dor two (you don't need to wait too long or let the burn totally escape ya, ha) and then go on. I seem to do more reps as I go along too. I strive for 6-8-8 (and like I said, do as much weight as I am comfortable with.) I guess (for me) after a while, do trial and error, you just kind of know what your limit is. I lift a lot (have been lifting 5 years too.. he's gone longer) and some days too I "just don't have it" and others I excel. (SO message here is don't be discouraged! You can't do everything precisely the same anywhere in life now, can ya? no way. later

When one exercises what is actually happening at the molecular level is that muscle fibers are being torn apart. Its when these muscle fibers heal that they become stronger and larger. The burn is simply the pain of those fibers tearing. If your looking for muscle tone then stop now but if its muscle bulk that your looking for, then keep going. When you keep going more of the muscle tears, keep in mind this is on the microscopic level. Its also a good idea to give those muscle a days rest from working out so that they can rebuild themselves.

hey hun....the burn is defiantly a good thang...you should feel a slight burn during the contraction but if it keeps on burning after you have completed the move then you should take a break....but if its only a slight burn that you can tell is your muscle working then your simply givin them the work they need and it wouldnt hurt to do a few more....as long as its not a sharp stabbing pain then you are doin' great....keep up the good work and don't forget....working your muscles will make them sore the next day and its fine to still work em'...but if their so sore that you have to struggle and use bad form to get through the exercise then you should give them a day of rest and plenty of stretches....love daisy

Here is what you need to do, if you are serious about losing weight and keeping it off. Eat 6 small meals a day about every 4 hours. Here what that will do for you, your metabolism will increase (i.e. Loose weight) and you will have more engry. If you go on a diet and eat less, your metabolism will slow down and store to fat. That is why diets dont work. Only the size of your fist, carbs (examples:baked potato, pasta, oatmeal, beans, corn, melon, apples, fat free yogurt, whole wheat breads)in one and protien (examples:chicken breast, swordfish, shrimp, turkey breast) in the other. You can also eat vegetables and salads with any meal, they dont have none or little fat). 30min cardo exercise every day. Any of these(examples: walking, jogging, swimming,running, biking, ect), Monday cardo, tues upper body (arms: curls, tricep extensions,pull ups, front press)(abdominals: leg pull crunch, leg raises), (chest: bench press, butterfly, pullover)(shoulders: front press, arm pullover, cross county skier machine)(back:seated row, lat pull downs, back extension)(YOU DONT HAVE TO DO IN ONE DAY, mix it up) wed cardo, thurs lower body (legs: leg pull,leg press, squats, lounges) fri cardo, sat upper. Sunday eat anything you want and dont exercising, you do this on sunday so your body doesnt go into starvation mode. YOU NEED TO TAKE SUNDAY OFF. If you stilck with this you will have a great body. also drink aleast 8oz of water daily! Stay away from Mcdonals, Wendys, ect because there is nothing good for you on the menu's even the salads are bad (beaon bits, cheeze, dressing, ect) Good Luck :)

When exercising bodyparts which cannot be overworked like the abs and calves it's good to work through the burn.

Work through the burn..Always..You stop for the burn and you also drop the pulse rate, want to keep that up...NO PAIN NO GAIN .. Good luck your friend in tennessee...ROB

Yes its better to rest in between reps...if you dont...youll just end up huting yourself...take your time...breathe...and let your heart rest...burn is good...but not excesively...

you do need to rest after a few days to let your body repair damage and build more mass!

yes it's always good to rest because you don't want to push it and injury your self
