you should begin to stop when the lights turn yellow that way you have time to make complete stop giving at least a car length before the bus, that will give children room to come around the front of the bus. i have seen people ticketed even though they were stopped, because they were to close to the front of the bus. if you see children at the side of the road and there is a bus heading your way, there is a good chance it is going to stop so you should be prepared to stop. you are suppose to be aware of what is going on ahead of you by at least 12 car lengths and if you are aware it is a good chance you will be able to make the stop. it is always against the law to over take a school bus while it is loading and unloading.

You can not pass or "overtake" a school bus that is loading/unloading children. If you are going the opposite direction on a divided highway, you can proceed, otherwise, you must STOP AND WAIT until the bus door closes and the driver turns off the flashing red lights. I'm in NJ, and I'm pretty confident that these laws are fairly consistent around the USA, and probably elsewhere, too.

When approaching a school bus if the big yellow lights up top are flashing then that is the warning that the bus is fixing to load or unload students... this is where you proceed with caution... but once those Red lights start flashing then you gotta stop cause that means the driver has given the students permission to get on or off the bus... once those red lights go off then proceed with caution you never know when a late student might run for the bus... Hope this helps

In the US, you cannot overtake a school bus that is loading or unloading children. Period. Therefore, it is always required to stop. You may not proceed until the flashing lights are turned off and the bus proceeds.

Whenever you are passing the bus and it has the stop sign and flashing red lights. In Arizona, if you are on the other side of the raod, and it is not a divided road, you must stop as well. if it is a divided road, you are not required to stop. I would look up the laws for your state, as it may be a misdemeanor to pass a school bus...

The sign on the bus should say it all: "STOP WHEN RED LIGHTS ARE FLASHING."

And yes, even if you're coming from the opposite side of the road...at least in California, and apparently Arizona as well. That may be a federal law, no?

Just follow the directions on the back of the bus:

Stop When Red Lights Flash

if they are not flashing, then you may pass... simple.
