Ok Lisa, here we go. Grits come from corn. They are ground up and you have the white hominy grits and yellow grits. You cook them 3 cups of water to 1 cup of grits. Add a pinch of salt and I recomend Celtic Salt(health food store) because it is real unadulterated salt. Bring your water to a boil and then stir in the cup of grits. let boil at medium for 5 minutes, then turn off the heat and cover with a lid. Let sit for 2 to 3 mn. Then serve with butter. Now let me tell you what you can eat these with. Please don't drool. You can have a bowl of grits with scrambled eggs, toast, and turkey sausage or eggs over easy(over light in some places) toast and a steak medium well. My Grandmothers youngest sister would do things up back in the day. Let me tell you! One time when Grand mother took me to see her, she made the family a breakfast I'll never forget. she made grits and scrambled eggs, plus buttermilk buiscutes with chicken gravey and to top this off she served fried chicken as well. There was homemade jelly on hand too. Lets not forget the cows milk as well. Are you stuffed yet? So you see miss lady you can hav a good time with grits. For starters make a small batch. The best thing to do though if you get them from a store is to follow the directions to the tee and keep this in mind...once they are done, serve them right away.while they are hot because as they cool they will become like oatmeal gets in the pot once it gets cold.
Miss lady I hope I have helped you in your quest to know about grits. Take care and have a good time cooking.

being a yankee that now lives in the south, the one thing I noticed is people always mix grits with some thing with taste. So how can they really like grits when all you taste is the cheese, eggs, bacon butter..etc..

I personally do not like them, and once the grits get hard they are like concrete..

If you've had corn meal, you've had (almost) grits. Grits is a type of corn porridge consisting of coarsely ground corn, traditionally by a stone mill. The results are passed through screens, with the finer part being corn meal, and the coarser being grits.

The Italians make Polenta (quite thick - sliceable) and serve it with tomato sauce. Personally, I could never "see" that.

My mother made it not quite so thick and always served it with canned fruit or jam. I imaging the "coarser" grits could be served this way, too.

Grits are delicious assuming you mean the ones that are made from corn. I eat them with eggs and bacon. You can also put cheese in them. GRITS is also an acronym for GIRLS RAISED IN THE SOUTH.

I LOVE grits! I get the Quaker instant grits that come in little pouches........heat them in the microwave according to the directions and add a few chunks of cheddar cheese. I love melted cheddar cheese in grits. Thought it sounded gross at first, but it is very good.......in my opinion.

I'm from the north but moved to the south 6 years ago, grits sound nasty but being adventurous I tried them and they actually are bland, you can boost the taste with cheese, butter, ham, ect. but I eat them at breakfast because they settle my stomach after eating bacon, sausage, ect.
