It depends. For anything $400 and under, these brands are all equivalent. For dSLR cameras, Canon is superior to Nikon but Nikon is much cheaper. Sony has recently entered the SLR market with their 10 megapixel A100 camera. However, the idiots used a digicam sensor in it instead of a full size CMOS sensor. I haven't seen any definitive reviews as to if the Sony entry level dSLR is competitive or not. They do have a series of high end lenses for the camera though.....also expensive. Only time will tell the quality of thier new system.

Sony, however, currently makes the best non d-SLR camera that money can buy. The DSC-R1 is a very nice rig (which DOES use a CMOS sensor, lol) and is far superior all fixed lens digital cameras and most entry level d-SLR that use a kit lens (good lenses are expensive and need to be purchased seperately).

If the Sony has Zeiss lenses then these should generally out perform both Nikon and Cannon. If it has Sony lenses, then Nikon and Canon will out perform it.

Sony memory is $10 more than Nikon and Canon.

All three are good cameras. Nikon is the most cost effective.

Canon and Sony make the best cameras. Personally, I would only use Sony if it's for professional use since their memory cards are brand-specific and cost more than the standard SD cards that Canon uses.

They all make great compact cameras. For in-depth reviews, check http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html
For digital SLRs, stick with Canon and Nikon. Their various models leapfrog eachother in terms of price and performance, with the Nikon D50 at the low end ($550) and the Canon 1DS Mk 2 at the top end ($6.900).

I prefer sony for audio electronics like walkmans. I've never owned anything Nikon, but my camera is a canon and I'm very satisfied with it.

They all have strengths and weaknesses, which change relative to each other from price range to price range. There is no single answer.

You need to look at what you require and how much you want to spend, then compare the models that suit. I like www.dpreview.com - it will help you learn about their features, too.
