Professionals use a wide range of cameras and lenses - it partially depends on the subject, but mostly depends on the photographer.

The "brand" of camera mostly matters for one thing - what kind of lenses you have. If you have Canon lenses, you use a Canon camera body. If you have Nikon lenses, you use a Nikon body. Many people choose a brand when they start and build from there.

People who are just starting these days tend to go with Canon because their (released) technology has been a step ahead of Nikon lately. The EOS 1Ds MKII is enormously popular. Watch any televised sports game and you'll see dozens of the things lining the field.

In addition to modern digital SLRs, pros use:
-Film SLR cameras of any brand (usually Nikon) with an expensive "digital back" that records the image digitally instead of on film.
-Medium format cameras (digital or with digital backs). These give higher resolution and are more expensive. Hasselblad is the dominant brand, though Bronica, Mamiya, and others are also popular.

The distance-to-target (model, mountain, etc) is more a matter for the lens than the camera. A wide variety of lenses are available for many different camera brands. However, photographers who like to run circles around their target usually prefer SLRs to medium format.

Landscape photographers are far better off using film.

Six of one, half dozen of another.

Kodak makes a 12 mb back for both the Nikon F and Canon F-1.

The Nikon F was first on the scene so everyone bought into it. It was rugged and offered a wealth of features, backs and lenses.

When the Canon F-1 came on the scene, five years later, it quickly made in roads, especially since they helped to introduce multi-coating and exotic lens elements.

With the modern age, however, it's six of one and half dozen of another.

The Nikon D50 or Canon Rebel XT

Professionals still use their old Nikons in the field, which is why Kodak makes a 12 mp digital back (costs a fortune).

Professionals still use Hasselblads for the extra big negative size (6x6) and very good lenses.

Playboy sill uses 8 x 10 sheet film for the centerfolds. Can't beat that!

It would take a 50 - 100 MP camera to equal that in resolution.

The standard for 35 mm photog has always been Nikon, although Canon has made great strides in recent years. A lot of pros like the Leica rangefinders for their lightness and ease of use and high quality optics. For landscapes and detailed distance views try a large format view camera like the Deardorf 8 X 10 in. A lot of med format fashion photographers use Hasselblad 2&1/4" sq. or the Linhof 4 X 5".

Canon and Nikon for interchange-able lens camera! and for some porn company like FTV (First Time Video) they do tent to use Sony! i hear the sound and see the laser focusing! I have used them both!

SLR are perfect for everything! Just buy a Canon Rebel Xt for beginners! it will be enough! Canon has more lenses! 50EF+ like 5 or 6 EF-S mounts!! Nikon dont even have half as much as canon!!
So I love Canon

Well the most popular brands for professionals are Nikon and Canon.....other than Hasselblad perhaps.
Digital SLR is the obvious choice, because of speedy performance and lens choices.
Medium Format cameras are also something that pros use...not exactly sure about those , though..I'm not a pro....lol

Canon and Nikon are the most popular professional brands. For studio work, you'll also see digital Hasselblads.
Obviously, you'd use a different lens for each kind of job.

canon and sony are best for taking pictures of models

and nikon does the best with making light and focusing on objects that are far away.

As far as price is concerned .. Nikon is "top of the line" but canon has more features. And sony is for anyone on a budget

note: the person above me has answered with "x" so if they end up with the same answer as me ... they copied me. How unfair =]

Very open question:

The use the camera that they are comfotable with, know the features of, and don't try to shoot something they don't have the lenses for.

Taking pictures is 90% the photgrapher, 10% the gear. If you know how to use the gear you have to it's fullest, you get some excellent shots.

Eric

PS I shoot Pentax
