I used to work at concessions at a movie theater. I thought it was funny when people got large popcorns with extra butter and a Diet Coke. I even heard some people say to their friend(s) that the Diet Coke offset the butter. I'm sure they were joking, but you never know.
OR...they may just like the taste of it! After all, the original song in the first Diet Coke commercial went "Diet Coke, yeah, Diet Coke! You're gonna drink it just for the taste of it!" ;-)

Some people prefer the taste. For example...when my step-father found out he was diabetic, he started drinking diet coke, and so did my mother even though she wasn't diabetic. It's just what we kept in the house. Now a regular sodas don't taste good to her. Over the years, she's become overweight, and you might see her with unhealthy food and a diet drink.

Believe it or not, not all calories are created equal... 100 calories from fat, 100 calories from protein and 100 calories from carbs will act differently in the human metabolism.... Carbs being the most difficult to assimilate without adding extra fat.
Soda is some of the worst stuff on the planet. The obesity rate is almost identical to the soda consumption rate....
not that Big Macs are innocent, but out of that meal, I'd say the fries and the soda are the most harmful....

Big fat people, as you say. are often Diabetic. Diet Coke is sugarless. Sometimes they don't think about the sugar or carbs in the food they are eating. They're only thinking about sugar being in their drink.
And...some people just like the taste of Diet Coke.

My grandmother does this and she id a BIG woman. I asked her about it and this her reply went like this. She had started a diet years ago. That's when she switched to diet drinks. The diet failed and she went back to pigging out. Only she stayed with the diet drinks because she had aquired a taste for them and the regulars just didn't taste good anymore.

Two reasons, at least:
1: You can actually grow to like the taste of the soda without the sugar,
or not be able to taste the difference.
2: In which case why consume the extra calories?
If they actually thought that sugar soda tasted much better, they probably
would not drink the diet soda, but if it costs nothing taste wise (satisfaction
wise), why do it?

I happen to be one of these fat women you ridicule. What difference does it make what we choose to drink with our food. Even if we were eating salad and drinking water society and people like you would still ridicule us. Who care what I or other "horrible fat looking people eat or drink"(as society describes us).
