Please this is serious, no yes or no answers, I need details. My American Pit Bull Terrier may have ruptured her Cranial Cruciate Ligament in her stifle. I've been to the vet, getting X-rays tuesday, they have to sedate her to relax her enough to perform the required tests. Has anyone had this surgery performed on their dog over 30 pounds, what did the surgery cost and what was the outcome? i.e. recovery, return to normal etc. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

i work at a shelter and we recently looked after a Labrador who had torn her knee ligaments after being hit by a car.

i'm in canada, where it seems that vets charge an arm and a leg for procedures (compared to where i lived in the states, that is). this dog at the shelter was going to cost anywhere from $800-$1500, depending on the procedure.

from what i understand there are generally two procedures - (one of which is a bit more intrusive than the other, and not necessarily any better). for the life of me i can't remember the details of either one.

if you can afford to take your dog to a orthopaedic vet, it may be well worth the expense.

some dogs can make a complete recovery, others are hampered for the rest of their lives - rehab, physical therapy, diet, weight, breed, consistency, activity level - all these, and more, are factors in recovery.

pit bulls (am staffs) are generally pretty high-energy dogs...

good luck and sorry to hear of your dog's injury.

Our cockapoo had something similar. She ruptured the cruciate ligament in her hind leg. (First one leg, Then the other, 2-3 years later) We took her to a veterinary orthopedic surgeon. I don't recall the specific details, but he did repair the ligaments. We kept her in a playpen for a few weeks after the surgeries. I don't recall if he prescribed pain medication or not. After a couple weeks, we had to perform some "rehab" on her. This consisted of flexing the leg several times a day. Our dog weighs only 14 pounds. The outcome was very good both times. But I urge you to find an orthopedic surgeon. Is there a school of veterinary medicine near you?

I recall the cost a few years ago was about $1250 for the surgery on each leg. A regular vet quoted approx $700 but I did'nt have much confidence in him. I hope you find the right DVM. Good luck.

I have had five dogs and a total of 4 ACL repairs and 1 CCL repair on my dogs. They were all over 100 lbs at the time and all made great recoveries!!! The surgeries were from $300 to $1,500. They returned to alomst normal and went on to live great lives. The bummer is the chance or the ligament repturing in the other leg.

My dog broke his leg right above the joint and the cost was outrageous. they had to screw the joint together as well as put in 2 pins. This is far more serious that could lead to arthritis and loss of strength in he leg.
Your looking at a couple grand easy plus the follow ups and medication. Its a bit late but you should consider VPI Veterinary Pet Insurance.

I hope she gets better really soon.

I can tell you that if this ligament is ruptured the dog will get arthritis real quick.
