Obviously, I do not believe that there is a God. Just wondering what excuses pro-life believers can conjure up for this question. Don't bother answering if all you can come up with is "God works in mysterious ways."

1 out of 3? no, more like 1 out of 20

I am not sure about your statistic, but the March of Dimes states that:

"fifteen percent of recognized pregnancies end in miscarriage" (1) which is about 1 in 7, and

that "everyday, 1 out of every 8 babies born in the U.S. arrives prematurely. Premature birth can happen to any pregnant woman, and no one knows why." (2)

"When a baby dies in the first 28 days of life, it is called neonatal death. In the United States in 2002, about 19,000 babies died in their first month" (3).

To offer a global perspective:

"Every minute, 20 children under the age of five years die. That means nearly 30,000 die every day, 10.6 million each year. Newborn babies less than one month old are at greatest risk. Nearly 4 million child deaths each year are among newborns. World-wide, for every two people that die in traffic accidents, one mother and 20 children die from preventable and treatable causes." (4)

And I'm not sure this is in any way an answer, but:

About ten years ago, our son was born four months premature. The doctors told us he would be stillborn. He wasn't. He lived for one day. I won't even describe the hell I lived through, do to human errors, for the two weeks following before we could know our son had found peace and we could begin find peace. I still haven't.

Still, I do not blame God. I have asked Him "why?" But I really didn't expect (and perhaps that is why I haven't received) an explanation.

(And in reading the responses posted while I wrote this, might I say that I don't blame Satan either and extend a big "thanks" to all those who said that such a loss is some punishment for sin? I pray that you will never know such a loss; if you do, just remember then the reason that you gave today.)

And I don't know whether God is "pro-life" or "pro-choice"; I think that this is a human debate and he did, after all, give us free will. We just have to be willing to accept the consequences of our actions.

And while I am "pro-choice," I have to admit that the statistics on abortions are just as startling as those one miscarriages and premature births.

how about I just say, you are a moron. THat is the same as asking why do people die? a LIFE is the point. Maybe you missed that part, If you are so pro choice how about you GOOGLE the word abortion and see exactly what it is that happens to those babies then go on another site that shows murder scenes.
what is your excuse? remember you don't even believe in GOD but I certainly hope you believe that murder is wrong. if it has a heart beat and moves then it is a life regardless of what the BIBLE says, this is not a religious question anyway, it is a moral question. IF you had any you would understand.
get a life. people like you really tick me off.

Thats okay you feel that way. We have to consider the fact that God doesnt rule this...world, at the moment. If you have read the Bible (not that im saying you havnt) you might remember a few scriptures about Satan being imprisoned on this earth. So thus, he is the rightful current, temporary king of this planet. As you can see with the damage he and his demons are doing. Plus, we are imperfect, we have a diseise called sin. Sounds corny, but because of sin, our bodys are not perfect, so we have things like mental disorders and miscarrages. Hope I didnt confuse you.

you're thinking of this the wrong way. God isn't being cruel, that's just how the human body works. mis-carriages happen because the body is unhealthy or simply not ready. it isn't a matter of God not being pro-life. think of it scientifically (if that helps) and take an anatomy class or something.

you might want to check on those stats, they seem exaggerated.

Let me take a shot:
a) It really doesn't matter whether you believe or not. So get that part out of consideration because like every other thing, its not your belief that impacts the existence of God.

b) This Universe runs with laws and principles of life and not by miracles. God has created this world with these fundamental machinary of laws and principles which God itself will not be break under normal circumstances.

c) Out of these laws and principles, one of them is Law of Karma. Even if God supports life, end of life is result of force generated by Karma surrouding us. So let us not blame God for results of our own acts. Many time these acts are not just in current life but in previous lives as well.

There are two ways to answer this question.
1. If there is something very wrong in the development stage the developing fetus will be rejected from the womb. happens in any animal.
2. sometimes its the awaiting soul that desides that it does not want to be born again into this world at that time.

How is a miscarriage any different that the death of a 5 year old or 60 year old? We all know that deaths of all ages happens. That doesn't mean it is okay to kill people of all ages.
By the way, where do you get your statistics from? Not that that has anything to do with the question. I just question the information you give.

Do not look to corroborate your beliefs or the lack of it by hearing other peoples opinion on topics like this. If you are, then you are looking for arguments or are bored or not completely confident in your choice. Make up your mind and follow your path, may you find all the peace and happiness you desire.

P.S: I apologize for not addressing your question but I feel there are enough answers on that here.

Because deities have nothing to do with it. The most common cause of miscarriage is chromosomal abnormalities which means something went wrong in the genetic mapping of the zygote and that is usually due to an abnormality in the egg or sperm cell.
