Because Kansas City lies directly on the border of Kansas and Missouri. It's the same city, it's just in both states.
You'd need to say KCMO, or KCKS if you lived there in order not to confuse whomever you're talking to.

Neither state calls Kansas city it particularly is capital. Kansas' capital is Topeka. Missouri's capital is Jefferson city. Kansas city is settled alongside the border of Kansas and Missouri. 2 states = One Kansas city.

There are a lot more than two Kansas cities. I'm sure Kansas has dozens of cities. They even have a city called Kansas City. Not very original, especially if you're in Missouri.

There are many state border cities like that, there's St. Louis, MO and East St. Louis, IL,; Wendover, NV and Wendover, UT. Those are just two that I'm aware of.
