I chewed one once for 5 minuets, and when I took it out there wasn't a mark on it! Are they intended to be eaten?

yes they are, you sprinkle vinegar and pepper on them, take them out of their shell with a pin and swallow them down with a nice cold pint of beer or real ale.

My wife Gloria started chewing a whelk in Blackpool in 1973 and she's still chewing it now. She reports to me that she's still getting bits of it out of her false teeth. I last saw her on the big dipper on the pier in 1983. She left without her teeth. They still smell of whelks, but they remind me of her..

In Scotland they are cooked by boiling in salty water. You eat them using a pin. I have to say that i have eaten one and they are bloody awful!!! However some people love them.

i have they are a bit chewey though i prefer garlic mussels
