I have the same problem... *sigh*... You have to brush really well--take extra time to do it... a sonicare would help a lot. Also floss-- I used to floss once a day, but that didn't help my gums so now I floss twice a day--u may have to do that if once-a-day doesnt work. Also use the proxybrush (a little brush with christmas-tree shaped bristles) to clean between the brackets of the braces. And also use some kind of rinse (its best if u use a rinse without alcohol cus that dries out ur gums... )

Your gums can overgrow when you don't clean them properly.

Basically your gums don't like plaque (that white gooey stuff that grows on your teeth after you eat) because it is made of bacteria and they react to it and get all swollen red and bleed very easily. After a while the gums get enlarged from all the inflamation.

The problem is made worse because you need to brush extra well with the braces as your toothbrush won't reach in the places it should if you just carry on brushing as you would without them.

You need to use a better technique so you can clean the plaque away from under your gumline. This will make your gums bleed at first, but only once you can consistently remove the bacteria away from your gums (the stuff that made it overgrow in the first place) will your gums start to look normal and stop bleeding.

Ian, sometimes this is a real problem with braces. While it is very important to clean your teeth as well as possible, I am recently starting to think that there are other things at play here besides the "usual" reaction to plaque accumulation. For the moment, I will remain with the party line and say that you have to do as good a job as possible keeping your teeth clean. Consider getting a Sonicare, if you don't already have one. They are great for braces.
