It goes back a few years, when 'milkmen' delivered the milk to your door. Most women back in the day were taken care of the husband who went out to work and the woman stayed at home looking after the home and children..... so ... when the husband went off to work in the morning, the milkman would deliver the milk and perhaps go in for 'extras'. If the woman fell pregnant gave birth and the baby didnt look anything like her husband they would say "It's the Milkmens". Hope that makes sense, but I think you probably get the gist of it. :-)

Milkmen often delivered milk during working hours. The frequent deliveries of milkmen to homes during the day has led to a high level of familiarity with many homemakers — often female — which has made the occupation a central figure in numerous milkman jokes. Travelling salesmen and mailmen had a similar reputation.
Milkman jokes, though they appear in dozens of different forms, all have the same basic plot: a woman gives birth to an infant who more closely resembles the local milkman than her husband, revealing the child's biological father and, in the process, the mother's adultery. An example of a milkman joke is this "The mother and father of a child show their new baby to a friend of the family. The friend mentions that the baby has light hair whereas its older siblings have dark hair, and asks why. The mother says, “Oh, we have a new milkman.” Milkman jokes are probably declining as a result of two-income families and a reduction of milk delivery.

A very long time ago, milk was delivered door to door. Husbands at work, wives at home, milkman running through the neighborhood delivering milk door to door almost. I'm sure there were a few wives that enjoyed the milkman for more than just his milk.

When the milkman was delivering the milk, it was quite possible he was serving the house wife. They say the same thing about the postman or any other delivery man. Because some women are just trifling and will screw anything, especially in uniform. Every watch desperate house wives.

the milkman came to the house in the early morning (when it was still cool outside) and therefore would often catch people in their nighties.
Well, we make jokes about situations that make us feel most uncomfortable, here combining being seen half-naked by a stranger and fearing that the child you're raising might not be your own, because it's got those weird eyes...

I guess today it would be the cable guy or the telephone man. When I was little, we did have milk delivered to our doorstep. So, it was a suitable statement. Hmmm, is it the milkman's child?

Lol. Because, before the early 1960's, milkmen would deliver dairy products to housewives every morning. The joke is, that because he came by everyday, and at a time when they were in their bedroom attire (robes, curlers, slippers) that he could be a "potential father". Bad joke, but it is used sometimes tongue in cheek to describe a child that does not look like the father.
