It means to do something without any guarantee of the outcome. Like leaping across a canyon but having faith that God will see you safe to the other side.

No one would leap off a cliff if they were told that a "special" cloud ten feet below would break their fall. But if you take a leap of faith, you don't question it. You know that this mystical cloud will catch you. There is no logical reason why a cloud would do that, and there's no way to prove it. You just have to have faith and leap.

The phrase "leap of faith" is a metaphor used by the 19th c. Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. He used it to try to illustrate the idea that we sometimes act on belief despite material evidence against our belief. He was talking about belief in God and religion, and arguing that material science, while explaining the material world, did not affect belief, which begins with "a leap of faith." This concept was later adopted by a group of 20th c. thinkers called existentialists who adopted the idea, without God, that each individual most act in his/ her life even though modern life "seems" hopeless. A leap of faith does not mean doing something stupid because someone tells you to do it. It is an interior (personal) state in which the individual accepts a belief regardless of the obvious material evidence against it. For example, if you decided to marry (despite the fact that over 50% of American marriages end in divorce,) raise a family (despite the physical threats of international terrorism, global warming, etc.) and to be a good, kind, tolerant person (despite the fact as we "see" everyday that neither goodness, tolerance nor kindness achieve any material benefit in this society,) then you have made a "leap of faith," in acting on values that you believe are important despite material evidence. God will cure all physical infirmities, including those who are lame. Soon, the earth and humans will be restored to paradise conditions like in the beginning as God purposed. That purpose has not changed as evidenced by Bible promises such as these: (Psalm 37:10-11) And just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more; And you will certainly give attention to his place, and he will not be. 11 But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace. (Psalm 37:29) The righteous themselves will possess the earth, And they will reside forever upon it. (Revelation 21:4) And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

You completely trust without looking. You have faith that you will be caught, there will be a place to land on the other side, you will not fall screaming to your death.
