Just was wondering for those who have metal implants, do your doctors tell you that showing your card that says you have one will get you through the metal detector without extra screening?

Usually, if you have an implanted medical device and you set off the detector, you will be wanded or patted down, regardless of drs note, however, the note can help avoid lots of questioning, etc.

Make sure the note has the persons first and last name as it appears on their ID and is on the dr's letterhead or prescription pad. I've found the more documentation you have the better as it gives TSA less to argue with.

I've also found that TSA "protocol" differs from airport to airport so you may have no problems at one, and a huge hassle at another.

I have metal poles in my two front teeth. I have never had a metal detector go off probably because their are small. But I have never heard of peolpe recieving a card to get through detectors. My friend has a plate in her arm and the detectors don't go off when she goes through either.

I have a titanium clip in my stomach but it won't go off cuz it's too small. But if you have larger stuff like shrapnel or something then you get a card and you go through and instead they use the hand wand and just know the places you have metal on you.

My mom has a steel plate in her leg, but she never got a card saying so. Then again, she's never taken a plane either.
