You have to apply for a lost title

Well, if you try to get a duplicate title, it will go to whoever owned it to begin with since you never switched it. You have something like 30 days to switch title after buying a vehicle. It doesn't say "You have 30 days unless it's a project car that's going behind the barn." I'm sure after 40 years of not being registered it has fallen out of the state's computer system.

Now, that being said, most states have a mechanism in place to get the title in lieu of payment when a vehicle has been abandoned on your property, but it gets complicated. Check your phone book for AUTO TITLE service agents.

Good luck with it.

Go down to the DMV. They have paperwork to apply for lost title, usually takes a week or two. You might need to get a bill of sale from whomever you bought it from. You will have to get the title in your name first of course, then the transfer is easy, usually on the back of the title. Remember to keep copies for yourself.

Well, go to the court house and tell them about the car and mabey they can help you. And if want to sell it for some real money, put it on eBay, people there are always looking for project cars.

Go to your Div of Motor Vehicles and ask what you need to do to get a duplicate title Here in Ohio (and its been 15 yrs since I did it ) seems like they printed me one on the spot

I figure if you call the DMV for your state you can expedite the lost title procedure. maybe 30 to 45 days depends on how fast they move. Unless you can remember who sold it to you and have them do it then transfer its easier and quicker.
