who cares what people think?
But if it bothers you that much, try going at a different time.

The People at the Gym are probably in their "own world" and they are not paying attention to you.

If you are an Over weight person you will probably feel bad because many people there have great bodies.

You are going there because you need to lose weight and because you need to get healthy.
So think that is what is really matters here!

Any way, if you feel bad may be you can go early in the morning or late at night. Gyms are full between 3:00PM and 7:00 PM before or after that there is not a lot of people.

May be going earlier or later you will not make you feel so bad.

Take a couple friends with you next time that you go and you'll have something eles to think about. Or try making friends with some of the people there and I'm sure your felling will stop. Or have your mom go with you so she can see whats happening but maybe your mom is right and no one is looking or talking about you. You're probably just self conscious but it's nothing to be ashamed of. And if all eles fails go to a different gym.

You won't stop feeling that way until you become familiar with the place and get to know some of the people there.
Trust me, even if they're looking at you, they may not be "seing" you. I sometimes look at people on the train but mean nothing by it. These people are there to do the exact same thing you are.
You need a hefty dose of self-confidence and an "I don't care what they think" attitude. Just ignore them and go about your business.
If they're on a treadmilll or or some other repetitive exercise machine, they're probably bored out of their minds. I used to work out at my phys therapy place and I watched the people there do their treatment exercises. If we made eye contact, I'd simply say: hello.. how are you getting on with this exercise. Looks hard. .. something like that.

Get a CD player or MP3 player and just listen to that. Don't look at anyone else unless you have to and just do your work out. Who cares what the hell they think? You're all going there for the same thing, more or less.

Just go and do your thing. Go for YOU, and not for anyone else. As you get used to the gym, you'll be ok there. After a while, you'll feel like you OWN the place.

I agree with Lance E with all but the paxil. Its horses for caourses; talking therapy may help as may medication (paxil/seroxat doesnt help everyone, but your doc may find something that does).
get it sorted now or it will cause you more grief in later life, trust me!

All the best

Short Cummings is an imbecile. Don't listen to her/him...whatever the hell it is.

It sounds to me like you've got textbook social anxiety.
See a psychologist or a psychiatrist and get diagnosed.

It's easily treatable. Paxil is wonderful for it.

I had that problem and for me it was a symptom of social anxiety (look it up). It feels like you tell yourself all the time they're not looking at you but deep down you KNOW they are (they're not, it just feels like that). its difficult to overcome but there is help ou there

The people who are working out at the gym are more than likely dealing with their own internal self-image problems. They can careless about you and what you look like. They are too busy thinking they're fat or getting out of shape.

If you live in America, the people in your gym see out of shape and overweight people EVERYDAY. Americans are getting fatter everyday.

The healthy and fit people in your gym are HAPPY to see you there. It motivates them to continue to workout. When you see the "in-shape" people working out, it should motivate you to "continue to work out".

Believe it or not the people in your gym are thinking about THEMSELVES and not you. They can careless..seriously. They usually feel self-conscious themselves. If someones body is hot and they are in shape they're probably thinking about their own body image, weight, age or appearance. That hot guy or hot girl who are both "in shape" are probably thinking the same thing you're thinking..."who's looking at me?"... "are they talking about me?"..."do I look fat?"..."why are they starring at me?" Old people look like they're wondering "who's looking at me" and "are they talking about me because I'm old". So you're not the only person who feels stupid at the gym.

People look at each other at the gym for many reasons. Some people are checking out the hotties both men and women. Some people just like to people watch, some look and learn how to work-out by watching others (which is good to do) and others would rather look at people than watch Oprah or the news on the TV sets.

I work out 5 x's per week and I'm no Pro...trust me... everybody in the gym fat or skinny are concerned about themselves.

I once had the "what are people thinking syndrome". I had to overcome my own fears of going to the gym. It took about 2 months because I had to change my mind-set and think positive thoughts about me and the other people in the gym.

If I were you, I would make it FUN and maintain a positive mental attitude! Life is about having fun anyway. Now a gym is a Club. Be PROUD to be a member. Make going to the gym a hobby! Set a realistic weight that you would like to be at and give yourself 12 months to work towards reaching that weight or a certain look. It takes time. Remember you MUST eat clean!!! Keep a daily workout and food journal. On the front page write your current weight and the date. Buy workout magazines and read the articles and tips. Also find websites online and read up on working out and healthy eating. Learn how to work out correctly and learn how to cook clean meals. The info you need is free online.

If you eat clean PLUS workout...you will reach your weight goal.

Just make going to your Club a new hobby and you'll be fine. Stick with it and then look forward to helping your family, friends and the new friends you meet at the gym get in shape and become more healthy too. Set a good example and be PROUD of yourself because you are doing something that the average person (in America) is too darn lazy to do and that's take care of their bodies.

Good Luck!
