I have to wear dresses a lot for a organization I'm in, and I usually have dresses made because it's cheeper than buying one. But I recently bought this beautiful fabric and I want a dress made out of it, but my mom want's to make it for me because she doesn't want to pay a semstress to do it. But she's not a good sewer and she's never made a dress before and I don't want her ruining the fabric because I had to pay for it and it's gorgeous. I tried to tell her no in a nice way, but she just gets offended. What can I do? and I don't have the money to have someone else make it either.

She is your mom, she will still love you no matter the situation. Just be honest with her, and everyone wins.

alot depends on how old you are. if you are in your late teen (18-19) then you could work and pay for the seamstress or tailor yourself. it would be hard but u could do it.

if not, go shopping with your mother for a pattern. Talk honestly with her in the material store about her talents and your concerns. Help her pick a pattern that she could complete successfully, one that is not too involved. Since I sew, I know that there are some nice simple dress patterns available. If she already sews, a pattern will be easy for her to follow. That way you could have a nice dress, save money and have your mom have the joy of making your dress.

I have made several dresses for others, ( prom, cotillion, etc.) and there is nothing like the pride one feels from seeing a garment they completed being worn. Unfortunately my only daughter died before I got to make her prom dress. GIve your mom this opportunity to do this for you. You and she can become closer as your shop, fit and complete this dress.

Good luck.

Well, if you already told her and she got offended, then you will just have to go with that, I guess. Eventually, she will understand and you can make it up to her.

You could let her make the dress and trust that she will take her time and do a really nice job for you and just explain to her how important this particular dress is and the fact that you want it look like it came from a store.

Ummmm.......Show her the pattern and see what facial expression she shows and go with your gut feeling from that. If she looks like, "this might be difficult", discuss it with her, I am sure, only want the best for you.
If she look like, "this will be a piece of cake", then take your chances on your mother. Pray the whole time she is sewing and it will probably the prettiest dress ever.

Good luck!!

You are in a difficult situation. I am guessing that you wanted your mom to pay to have the dress made. There really is no way to keep from hurting her feelings. You could get a part time job to pay to have it made. And ask your mom to make something simple for you. I wish I had better advise. I wish you much luck.

Try asking her to pay for it and then pay her back. Tell her that you want it made a specific way and that you don't think she would know how. Tell her that you don't mind her sewing it for you but you would prefer someone who has had more experience with the type of material to sew your dress. Either way she will probably get offended. Just explain to her that you will pay for it.

Suggest to her that she try a practice dress first, on a less expensive piece of fabric. Tell her nothing would make you happier than to wear a "Mom Original", but you'd prefer she did a trial run.

wow!

If you have another event coming up... (if not make one up)
get some material and give your mom that SPECIAL PROJECT.

Tell her, "Mom, this event (the one you're making up) is really important and I want to look my best. So I have charged you with the important task of making a beautiful dress for me"
and that'll keep her busy for a few.

It's hard b/w mom and daughters- I know!
On one hand, we want to be honest; and on the other we don't want to hurt their feelings.
So, just make up a lil white lie (if you have to) and make her proud and a part of your life.
Mom's get a lil nuts when we exclude them.

Good Luck!

You have a problem. Your mom wants to do something nice for you but she has no skill.Perhaps you can find some one who will sew it for you and let your mom help her. That way she can improve her skill and not be offended. I wish both you and your mom the best of luck..

Well the truth hurts but this is your mom, make a compromise. Maybe you and your mom can fifty-fifty paying a semstress to do it. Just tell her how you feel. Don't worry about it shell understand someday.

Buy or borrow a dress from one of your friends if at all possible. You can also check some of the nicer resale shops in town.

Tell your mother that she has a lot of other really terrific talents (name some) but her sewing isn't really what you're looking for at your age right now. Then hug her and tell her you love her. Her feelings maybe hurt but most parents don't want to embarrass their children.
