This is the meanest board. If you go to the other boards, people are nice and give advice and answer questions with real answers. But as soon as you put religion in the mix, people get nasty. Why is it so different? People have their own views, but why get so nasty with each other? Why the sarcasm, and hate?

I think there are a lot of hurt and bitter people out there who have been burnt and so they blame and are angry at God. A lot of people have been burnt by someone at a church and are maybe unforgiving. So they blame Christians and religious people in genral and have a stereotype of them becuase of their bitterness. It is upsetting. Poeple are so offensive in this area, I see that too.

Unfortunately the world is not a nice place and the topic of religion and politics reflects this. Religion is something that people are VERY emotional about, both those who follow a religion and those who would rather be left out of the whole thing. Sadly, religious people do not see that just because they want to live their lives a certain way does NOT mean that everyone wants to - and when they become intrusive it causes an emotional backlash.

Conversely people who are not religious often feel that religion is illogical and try to do exactly what religious people do - save them from themselves! So the battle goes on.

People are very sensitive about their religious and political beliefs, for good reason, they are personal and generally instilled at an early age, akin to indoctrination or brainwashing. Organized religion generally endorses a particular view toward the other, the outsider. It may be welcoming or harsh. But the other is different. He is not us. He does not share our beliefs. His beliefs are wrong. Ours are right. We must defend our beliefs, preferably to the point that he will adopt them. The religion believes it holds its own monopoly on god. There is a narrowmindedness and an intolerance of the other that you just don't get in discussions of cooking or gardening. And the ones who are not hateful or sarcastic still secretly hope that you will believe what they believe, some day, if you are able to see with their open eyes. Because they are right, of course.

That is really sad that this has been your experience. I personally just scan through those til I get to the serious answers. I'm sorry you've had a bad experience, but if it has been so negative and I was in your shoes then I would stick to boards where I feel more comfortable.

Also, what some people cannot understand, they hate. They were never taught how to explore and learn. They are afraid to learn just for the sake of learning. They feel that someone is going to try and "change" them over to "their" way of thinking. Not understanding that yes, learning about other people does in fact change you, but in a good way. That you can learn about other people and still keep your core beliefs.

Good thoughts for you.

It seems like a lot to me too. I have seen christians get nasty towards atheists (I just thought that christians were nice to everybody). I try to answer every question honestly without getting a nasty attitude or being sarcastic (I do that to everybody I see in day to day life), here I just be as nice as possible, with exceptions to the really moronic questions that some people ask.

I noticed that even in the answers to this question, there are those who confuse an opinion with the expression of that opinion. We all have different opinions, that's not a bad thing. But we should -express- those opinions like civilized people.

You'd think the "spiritual" area would be loving, wouldn't you? Especially considering that the world's religions all preach love. The problem is that people think less of opinions that differ from their own.

I think it's because beliefs have to do with our level of knowledge and intelligence. Therefore when some don't understand other people's opinions or they disagree with their beliefs they consider them fools and consequently laugh at them.

To my mind calling a person 'stupid' is a very hard step. You can never know whether that person is indeed stupid or actually so much smarter than urself that u can't even understand them.

What is more, sarcasm in the cases u r referring to shows insecurity. People usually get nasty when they don't have proper arguments. Nothing logical to sustain their ideas comes to their mind so they begin their mockery.

There's been this battle between ideas since the beginning of mankind so it's only natural to find people who still treat it barbarically:)

It's not only about religion that people get mean on here about...although on a religion question it's like they get really mean....I don't know why people can't be nicer on here..probably because they don't give a ****..(the people on here answering question..there probably just doing it for the points)So they don't care how they act...or should i say they don't care what they say on here...I don't know why people are so nasty andd hateful on here...Maybe no one ever told them ...if u don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all!!! Or at least when your stating your point of view to do it maturely...

I do agree with you ,but....
If someone was attacking your friend or family is it not your duty, responsibility, and right to defend them? I see on this board that so many faithless people come here to try and break or put down someones faith. Is that not real violence? When someone puts their faith in life in such a way that they live it, its understandable that they will become defencive. The way in which they defend their Lord may not be the best expression of love, and yet, I feel its right. You have to be a little qualified to ask these questions without offending God or His followers.

Yes, this does seem to be the case.

Perhaps it's because religion is both intensely personal and important to people. They get defensive if they think someone is trying to tell them their relationship with God is wrong or misguided.

Or they've had terrible experiences with religion when young, and someone even mentioning God brings back those awful memories. They equate ANY belief in God with the repression and strictness they recall from their youth.

It's on both sides, this defensiveness and knee-jerk nastiness. But occasionally there are folks who can discuss things rationally!

I definately agree with you. I think people believe so much in their own ways and deep down they have the same doubts as anyone else and they get mad when others voice them because they don't have the nerve to do it because of the way they were taught or brought up. They can't just say you know this is what I believe and this is why I believe it they have to call you naive and all other kinds of things instead of doing what their religion says to do by being nice and considerate to others and things. It just doesn't make sense to me...kind of sounds like hypocricy to me.
Good question!
