How does the economy survive in the northern half of the US?

Question

I refer, of course, to the few remaining outposts that the Mexican invasion hasn't reached yet.

How do people in Maine build houses? How do people in North Dakota have mowed lawns? Landscaping in Wisconsin? WTF?

I thought these were jobs Americans wouldn't do...

Should these states be crushed by now? How do they survive without overwhelming numbers of illegals to do 'all the jobs that Americans' won't do?

I live in an area of the US where you can't find an English speaker to save your soul, and I mow my own lawn, I clean my own house, I take care of my own kids.

Are there any documented, nonbiased studies that honestly show that illegals have a positive economic effect on this country? And please don't direct me to www.laraza.com, if I want to listen to biased people without a clue I can just read some of the pro-illegal questions here on Yahoo.

I'd love to be proven wrong. Actual hard, undeniable facts that the Illegals contribute more than a deficit...

I'm a very rational person, my mind can changed with the right information, I would just like to see it. I read post after post about the economy being totally dependant on illegals, you've called people out for their sources on immigrants hurting the economy.

I'm just calling out the Pro-illegals to post some hard numbers supporting their side of the equation.

I don't have a bleeding heart, I could give a rat's *** about charity, but hard facts have been known to change my mind in the past.

It's a fallacy, and you've discovered why. If there are jobs that Americans won't do, then how do those jobs get done in areas where there are no illegals?

The truth is that most illegals are working construction and making at least $15 per hour. In fact, in many parts of California now, illegals have banded together (usually in front of Home Depot) and are refusing to work for less than $15 per hour.

The pro-illegal argument is ludicrous, if for no other reason than the people they're defending are ILLEGAL. Following their logic, I'm allowed to rob a bank if my family is hungry. Just call me an undocumented borrower.

You are right on in every point you make!! Outstanding question and added details. I live in Maine, and guess what?? I live in a condominium and PAY to have my lawn mowed and parking lot plowed, and the fences fixed. AND, none of the work is done by illegal aliens. And before the retirement to a condo, I did all of those things myself. It's about time we faced the issue which is NOT immigrants but ILLEGAL aliens who drain our resources and contribute little if anything to our economy.

What? Are you under the assumption that before in the influx of illegal aiens that we were incapable of doing these things? Our states should be crushed?

You don't need to be re-directed anywhere on the net, you need to look OUTSIDE. You'll find people of every walk of life doing those domestic chores you speak of. Yup, those of in the Northern US, the Western, Southern and even them fellars in the South.

Now I'm not an advocate for the aliens, they're a HUGE financial drain on the US economy. Your tax dollars are burdened to death, paying for their medical treatment (as they have no insurance) and at last count there were about 18 million children of UNdocuemented aliens using our school system. Now, understand this, they don't pay taxes but send their children to our schools, YOU pay for that. Now multiply those 18 million by $2,000/year (the resrved estimate it costs to educate a child in this country) and that's another cost you cover.

They drain our economy in so many other ways but that is one of the most remarkable and conservative estimates that stands out there.

Well, I gotta go.................the laundry needs a doin' and then there's that lawn!

very good point -- I would love to see a study like that too -- that is something I'm very curious about. but even if the finding is that the economy doesn't "ride on their contributions", that still doesn't change the problem. The problem is that somehow we've got to figure out how to shift this population to become documented --- because of the cost & social implications of talking about deportation. it would be cold & cruel -- no argument. it would cause serious riots & civil war. so we're at a point where we have to figure out how to make the smooth shift to legal residence for this population -- I don't see a logical alternative.

Well, while the south has a big illegal workforce, the north has big corporations the south and other places buy from. The south has them too, but not as many. And the thing about North Dakota? The grass is dead there, and what isnt dead they use as pasture for cows.
