Do you have pictures of this car any where? For any number of reason your orignial decklid could have been destroyed(maybe it was dented, etc) the easiest fix would have been to just head on down to a junkyard and find another hood that would fit.And sounds like they found a 1966 decklid, no big deal it works and they just left the 1300(being the motor for the 1966 beetle a 1300cc) emblem on it to save the trouble, engery, etc of patching the holes it would leave by ripping it off. So basicly you just have the wroung deckling on it.

This is a 1966 decklid, is this what your's looks like : http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=238066

Here what your decklid should look like:
http://images.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/pix/medium/1228599.jpg

Notice the vents on the later one? Those are to help with cool a normal hardtop 66 wouldn't have them while a 66 vert(which would be fine to keep running on your car and worth some cash too) you wouldn't want to run the unvented on since it can lead to over since your running a much larger more than a non-vented 66 decklid was intended to have under it.

Now there's all so another reason why you could be running this decklid and that is that someone could have been tring to make the car look like an early(67 and below). Very, very common in the vw world(is your car a super or standard) and maybe that's all as far as they got.

Now what to do about it? Realy it's you car, but here are the ideas I can think of if it's a non-vented sale it and by the correct decklid for your car. The 66 will be worth more so won't loose any cash this way. If it's a 66 vert lid may just want to keep it(could all ways remove the 1300 and have the holes filled in, but personnely I'd just run it as is most people won't know), they look better and are worth a good deal of money, but if you do sale it it you'll have the money to get a very nice year correct deck lid. Anyways I realy don't know what your plans are for this car so only so many ideas I can shoot you, but feel free to email me at patrickm2213@yahoo.com or drop me a msg on yahoo msg patrickm2213 and I try to help you out any way I can.

UPDATE
Also just to cover all bases there is all so a small chance that your car could have been a euro car that was never intended for the us market(the beetle only got the largest motor in the states, which for your's would be the 1600cc dp) but it could have come with this small motor(1300) if it is in fast a euro car. This would make your rather rare in the states. Realy need a pic of that deck lid. But with out a pic, if the motor and vin show that both of them being made the same month then odds are that decklid didn't start it's life with your car, but as put on later.

That is the displacment of the engine.

You motor has been replaced with a bigger one.

The code AE is a 1600 cc 60 HP manufactured from Aug 1970 thru Sep 1971

1300 is the cubic capacity of the engine, or 1.3litre. This was the smallest engine size, the next was 1.6 or 1600

Thats the motor size that came in it. You can interchange them easy so it sounds like some one upgraded to bigger motor.
